I only spent one day on the South coast of
Crete. This was mostly because I had limited time and all of the transportation connections seem to go out
of
Chania,
Rethymnon,and
Iraklion and I figured that I had to stick to the northern coast because of my limited time on the island. My only exposure to the South
was on my Journey to
Samara Gorge. However, on this trip I experienced
some of the most scenic parts of Crete. Many people I met said the south west is the most
attractive part of the island and I agree.
The south west is dominated by the White mountains. From these mountains, numerous rivers have cut gorges down have been cut through the soft Limestone which are ideal for hiking. Samara is the most famous, but others are almost as nice and have a lot less people. The "foothills" go right down into the sea, making large resorts impossible. Most of the towns I experience were little hamlets. These are photos I took on my way to Samara gorge and on the way back to Chania. Hora Sfakion was once the capital of the Sfakion region (hence Hora) but it is now just a little port where you catch the bus back to Chania. Some people spend the night here, but is neighbor, Loutro is more attractive port with a lovely ruined castle to the west. I hope you enjoy the photos. Any comments, please E-mail me, |
