San Marcos
(Venice)

Venice, is generally known for two things. Its canals and San Marcos Basilica. San Marcos' Basilica is an eleventh century basilica built to house the pilfered bones of St. Mark. It is built in the Byzantine style of architecture (most of Venice is Gothic with traces of the Byzantine influences) and the murals reflect this heritage. The murals both inside and outside of this basilica are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen and the building its self is on a very grand.  The cathedral is remarkable well preserved, considering the city is on the sea and San Marco's Plaza is the first thing to flood. Here are some pictures I took of this splendid cathedral. (Unfortunately when I was there I still thought I could get through two months in Europe on just 12 roles of film so I didn't take that many pictures of the Cathedral its self..)
