Lisbon is the centrally located capital of Portugal. Originally built on the northern shores of the straw sea, in just about the dead center of the Portuguese Atlantic coast, this city was one of the most important ports during the ages of discovery. Unfortunately for the Portuguese the Lisbon’s fortunes started to fade as the Portuguese empire faded away. Furthermore, several devastating earthquakes have also had their toll on the city. Therefore the “modern” city is a mixture of modern and old. Neon lights and ancient cathedrals. Modern trains and old trolley cars. Its quite a charming city that is well worth a stop over. Unfortunately it is often overlooked because of its location. However a visit to this historic city is well worth the time. I have broken my photos down into three sections. The Alfama which was the traditional sailor’s quarter. The Baixa which is the modern tourist center and then random pictures of the center of Lisbon.(Note Belem is part of Lisbon but I am making it separate
