The Alfama was traditionally where sailors were quartered in Lisbon. Here they would wait until their ships set sail to Africa or the new world in search of plunder.
This district is fairly well preserved which is surprising due to the number of earthquakes in the area.
It has tiny streets that twist their way through beautiful but cramped buildings. There is also a mediocre
cathedral that was originally built romanesque but was rebuilt as Gothic because to an earthquake. From a distance, it actually looks more like a fortress
than a church, though that was the point of the romanesque style. There is also a cool ruined castle overlooking the rest of the city
as well as this district. I have provided a small sampling of pictures from this quaint area.
