I tried to link the names listed in "Cranbury Past and Present" with the data compiled by Hugh Voress and archived at Jerry Applegate's genealogy web site. There appears to be three main lineages of Applegate's that passed through or settled Cranbury, NJ.

Children of Thomas Applegate (5A1; c1700 - 1770) and Andrew Applegate (5A4; 1732 - 1792)
Section 2 - Decendants of Thomas Applegate III, born c1674

Children of John Applegate (5E; c1676 - 1748)
Section E - Decendants of John Applegate, born c1676

Children of Richard (5G1B) and Noah (5G1C; c1756 - 1812)
Section G - Decendants of Richard Applegate, born c1683

History

From the sketchy informaton that is known, it seems that the Applegates settled in Cranbury after and as a result of Thomas Applegate's (5A1) purchase of a 200 acre plantation and other property adjoining Cranbury Brook. thomas' will referes to this property as follows: to "Gabriel, 20 acres of land I bought of John Thorp, lying in Monmouth Co., NJ; second son Ezekial, that house where he dwells, near Cranbury Brook and 110 acres adjoining. The youngest son, Anthony, this house and plantation of 200 acres; also 20 acres on the north side of Cranbury Brook, that joins Benjamin Appleget's land."

Benjamin, referenced in Thomas' will, appears to be Benjamin Applegate (5E1; 1703 - 1782) who inherited land from his father, John Applegate (5E; c1676 - 1748). according to Hugh Voress' data, land recordsshow that John had "bought another piece of land, in Middlesex Co., NJ, by deed dated Oct. 6, 1710 from George Willocks of Richmond Co., NY and John Harrison of Somerset Co., NJ. This property was a 200 acre tract of land on the south side of Cranbury Brook."

In both lineages, some also used the name Appleget interchangeably with Applegat, especially so for the descendents of 5A1 and 5G1C. It is therefore surprising that earlier researchers were able to distinguish between the four ancestral lines and keep them apart. Probably as a result of this confusion, there is some disagreement between the information in "Cranbury Past and Present" and the data compiled by Hugh Voress. Compare the information for Peter W. Applegate (5G1C4; 1792 - 1849) and Peter A. Applegate (5A4A8; 1798 - 1849), both buried at the 1st Presbyterian Chruch. Hugh Voress' data shows both died on January 39, 1849, but Peter A. (5A4A8) died on April 28, 1849 and apparently went by Appleget. There are otherminor differences that occur and hopefully they can somehow be reconciled. There are also some listings in "Cranbury Past and Present" that I could not find in Hugh Voress' data.I also discovered soem graves that are in neither resource, for example Eliza and Hanna, wives of Udolpho Buckelew.

Overall, the Hugh Voress' data is surprisingly accurate and I hope the information that I posted here can augment the more comprehensive genealogical data. More information about my ancestors is compiled on this web site under Andrew Applegate (5A4).
