Character: Frank the Rabbit

From: Donnie Darko

Completed: Halloween 2006

One of my all time favourite movies is Donnie Darko. I've always been creeped out by this character, and had always dreamt of making it, but had shyed away since it wasn't feminine. However, after years of wearing corsets, high heels, and other sufferings with costumes, this became a welcome project. Comfort! Can't beat it.

It was made over the course of 5 days, for approximately $40.

::suit::

the suit, cowl, and gloves took about 4 yards of dark grey faux fur. if you've never searched for grey fur before, it's a complete nightmare to find at times. i lucked out and found some while browsing a new wally world's craft department. luck, luck i tell you!

as for the belly patch, i had leftover scraps of long-pile white monster fur on hand.

i used a basic body/fur suit pattern i picked up a while back during a 99 cent pattern sale. the claws, which need to be remade, are lacquered, and black.

:: mask::

this was fun. no, really..and easy, suprisingly. because i was rushed on time, and already had an abundance of model magic, i used that, on a wiremesh base. i layered up the clay, making the teeth and eyes seperately. since it takes about 24 hours for each layer to dry, the layering and drying helped make the mask very stiff. stiff enough, in fact, to fully support the ears without any additional infrastructure.

the mask was painted, and varnished, and the eyes were glued on to the blank wiremesh sockets. i can see a little...but not much. there's a bit of visibility in the nostrils, and sockets, and mouth, but not much.

either way, though, i flippin' love wearing this costume, even if everyone mistakes me for a man.
