Lorien Ferris
Born in 1969 in Hamburg,
Germany, Lorien spent his early years traveling the world. He lived
his first few years on Ibiza, a Spanish island in the Mediterranean.
There he learned to appreciate the sunny, rocky countryside where
he lived with his parents and a donkey. He was also exposed to the
rhythmic music of drum circles and spent lots of time by the sea.
After Ibiza, he moved to America where he has lived ever since.
For the next few years he lived in Los Angeles and Bolinas in California
and then moved to Durham in North Carolina. For the past twenty
years, Lorien has resided in the San Francisco Bay Area which is
his home today.
Traveling has always
been an important aspect of Lorien's life. Other than the places
he lived, Lorien has traveled to many countries in Europe and around
the Pacific. This rich tapestry of environments and people formed
his powerful interest in geography, which he studied at UC Berkeley.
Lorien's travels also exposed him to many different cultures and
their musics, which he also studied at college. One of the attractions
of electronic music for Lorien has been it's international nature,
without lyrics there is no language barrier. Electronic music also
spans time, integrating ancient tribal rhythms with ultra futuristic
sounds, thereby becoming universal.
About
The Internet
This universal aspect
of electronic music is also reflected in another recent development
of technology: the Internet. To some degree the Internet has removed
the barriers of culture between the people of the world. Images
and sounds now travel freely between people of vastly different
and distant cultures. Language is still a barrier in this exchange,
but that too will change. Lorien is interested in this fusion of
the minds of the people of the earth. He is interested in the Internet
as a medium of a true collective consciousness and as the seat of
the first technological intelligence. Lorien hopes that by linking
pieces of information together, we may be lending our intelligence
to the Internet. In time, consciousness, probably different from
our own, may arise spontaneously.
Currently, Lorien is
looking for a way to help this process along. By integrating the
international spirit of electronic music with the networking power
of the Internet, he hopes to popularize these concepts. His dream
is that the many people of the Earth will finally understand that
they are all one race, that our various cultures can combine, and
that reason can triumph over superstition. He believes that the
Internet can help us to reach these realizations and promote communication,
understanding, and cooperation among all of us. Lorien believes
that we will only survive ourselves if we can accomplish this task
and that if we follow a philosophy of selfishness instead, we will
lose our humanity, and eventually our existence.
