Universal Machine

Welcome to the official web page for Universal Machine, electronic music created by Lorien Ferris. This music is dedicated to the idea that machines and nature are fundamentally linked and are part of the same continuum. We, and any other intelligent life forms there may be, are the connection between these aspects of the universe. Music is an expression of this link, a melding of the natural and artificial, which is intuitively understandable. Through music we can feel the underlying forces of nature, for our brains and the universe are truely one and the same.

Throughout time, humans have created music with innumerable instruments, including our own bodies. Now we have computers and synthesizers to aid us, and for the first time our instruments have become universal. Now our instruments, like us, can simulate the functions of other instruments and machines. I invite you to journey into my mind and out through our universe through music. Maybe we can learn something about ourselves and the beautiful and intricate reality we are a part of. Perhaps, we will find that we are all universal machines.

Custom Music

Lorien Ferris also produces music for hire on projects such as advertising, software, and presentations. These pieces are credited to Aragon Productions for they represent a dialog between the artist and his clients and are therefore not pure artistic expressions. Lorien does enjoy these dialogs, though, and is always interested in exploring new relationships with forward looking clients. A list of the clients and projects which have been produced follows:

DIVE Labs Inc. for Neo-Tokyo (a virtual reality video game), 1994

MetaTools Inc. for Comdex trade show presentations, 1997

MetaCreations Inc. for advertisements during Sigraph trade show, 1997

MetaCreations Inc. for demo on Kai's Power Show software, 1998

Shaba Games LLC. for Slipgroove (a Playstation video game), 1998

Shaba Games LLC. for Grind Session (published by Sony Computer Entertainment America for the Playstation)
