The Royal Domain

The Royal Domain is the land within the Kingdom of the Shield that is administered directly by the crown. It includes the city of Newcastle and its villages and surrounding land.

The Principality of the Shield

The Principality of the Shield is a long region along the southern border governed by the knights of the Order of the Crown and ruled by its Principal member.

The Duchy of Stonecastle

Stonecastle is the region of the Kingdom of the Shield west of the Iron Hills and east of the Great River. Stonecastle is held in perpetuity by the descendants of King Pere, a contemporary of Morgan Shieldbreaker.

Counties

There are five counties, each ruled by an Earl or Countess. The five Counties (from West to East, generally) are Burrow, Downland, Norwich, Rosemere, and Arundel.

The Prince or Princess of the Shield, the Duke and Duchess of Stonecastle, and the various Earls and Countesses are collectively known as the King's Council of Nobles and as the Tenants-in-Chief.

Chartered Towns

Within the Shieldlands, there are a handful of Chartered Towns. Possession of a charter from the King makes these towns free of the rule of the Tenant-in-Chief of their region. Instead, the town's fealty (and taxes) are given directly to the King. King Morgan Shieldbreaker granted the first of these to Stoneleigh, a mixed community of Dwarves and Men in the Iron Hills.
