Tournament ArchersArchery Tournaments will use targets that correspond to modern olympic targets. These targets are 4 feet in diameter, and are a series of 10 concentric scoring rings. The center scoring ring is 4.8" in diameter. The innermost ring is further marked with a 2" diameter inner circle and a 1/5" solid dot to mark the very center. Here's how those break down in GURPS terms:
(Incidentally, the above is a faithful representation of a modern Olympic archery target in GURPS terms. So, here's how a single shot would break down. We'll use 70 yards as the range for this example. Each shooter will be using a bow with accuracy 2 and will fully aim his shot for a total of +4 to hit. Also, it is assumed that each shot should be considered an all-out attack (determined) for an additional +1. The range modifier is -9 for the 70 yards, and the roll to hit the target at all is a +1 from this (the modifier for the outermost scoring ring of the target). This comes down to: Therefore, the character will be rolling against Skill-3 to successfully "score" on the target at 70 yards. An exact hit at this number will be equally likely to hit the Outer White, the Inner White, or the Outer Black. A d6 will be rolled to determine what is hit. Similarly, a shot made with a margin-of-success of 1 will hit either the inner black or outer blue, again determined by a d6. Greater margins-of-success will hit higher scoring rings according to the table above. Treat a critical success as a roll of skill-10 or as its actual value, whichever is better. Here's a table of those results:
MoS = Margin of success, based upon net skill (after considering range, target size, and all aiming bonuses). A character may specialize in target shooting by buying a Technique for a particular range. Each "range band" in GURPS counts as a separate technique. So, you can specialize in 20 yards, 30 yards, 50 yards, 70 yards, 100 yards or 150 yards. Each specialization covers the listed range up to the next (i.e. the 30 yard technique would apply to any contest held at a distance of 30-49 yards). In the Kingdom of the Shield the most common ranges are 150 yards and 70 yards. 20 and 30 yard contests are also known, but are less widely held (see below). The 150 yard contest is more often used for the peasant yeoman than for more professional archers. The usual format of this contest is to narrow a very large field of participants to 6 or 12 archers based upon the results of a single shot, and as such it is often as much a contest of luck as skill. The 70 yard contest is the most common range used for professional soldiers and the elite yeoman. Scores are high and it is considered by these warriors a very effective measure of skill. The 20 to 30 yard contest are typically those held indoors in the ballrooms of a noble's manor house. Noblemen and those of their household occasionally take up shooting as a hobby. These contests are not usually taken very seriously by the genuine warrior archers, though some of the noblemen are quite skilled (and it is often impolitic to beat the master of the house). These contests typically use smaller targets with fewer scoring rings.
