The Kingdom of the Shield

King or Queen

The inheritor of King Morgan Shieldbreaker is the recognized King or Queen of the Shieldlands. The present day monarch is King Mordeyrn Thoron, grandson of Morgan Shieldbreaker. The King is addressed as Majesty.

Prince or Princess

The title of Prince or Princess has two functions. It is used to recognize the principal member of the King’s knights, the Order of the Crown, and it is also used to recognize the legal heir to the king. A Prince or Princess is addressed as Highness; an heir as Royal Highness. At the present time, King Mordeyrn has neither legal heir nor a wife. The only present-day Prince or Princess is Princess Robyn of Stonewall, the chief member of the order of the Shield.

Duke or Duchess/ Earl or Countess

The Kingdom of the shield is divided into five Counties, one Duchy, the Principality of the Crown and the Royal Domain around Newcastle. The Duchy of Stonecastle is at the west of the Kingdom and is ruled by the Kingdom’s only Duke and Duchess, Duke Ayden and Duchess Odette. According to the Franciscan code, the boundaries of the Duchy of Stonecastle and the rule of it are held in perpetuity by the descendents of Duke Perry, a contemporary of King Morgan’s. The other divisions are established by the King and can be changed or given to other nobles at the King’s whim. The King’s household governs the Royal Domain directly, and the order of the Crown sees to the governance of the Principality of the Crown along the Meldanian border.

The five Counties (from West to East, generally) are Burrow, Downland, Norwich, Rosemere, and Arundel. A Duke or Duchess is referred to as Grace and an Earl or Countess is referred to as Excellency.

Warden

The kingdom is divided into three wards: West Ward, East Ward, and North Ward. The title of Warden is given to some member of the nobility in each region, granting him or her the right to collect an additional currency tax for the purpose of raising a standing army.

Those nobles who are Wardens of the Crown can be referred to as Excellency. An Earl or Countess with the title Warden would rank in precedence above the other Earls and Countesses but still below a Duke.

Lord or Lady

A Lord or Lady is a member of the nobility. The Lords swear fealty directly to the nobility of their region and not directly to the King. A Lord or Lady is referred to as My Lord or My Lady.

Any person charged with the administration of an Estate in exchange for service is a Lord (Lord of the Manor of …); also, any member of a Noble family is considered a Lord or Lady (if granted that privilege by their Noble).

Companion

A companion is a member of one of the Kingdoms two orders of Chivalry: The order of the Crown, which owes fealty to the King and Queen and the Order of the Stone, which owes fealty to the Duke and Duchess of Stonecastle. A companion is referred to as Honor, and can also have the title Sir or Dame prefixed to their name. Companions are often called Knights.

Captain

A captain is man granted the authority to raise a force and grant them authority to bear arms. All Nobility possess this privilege; a Captain is someone who does not administer the King’s lands. This title may be granted by the King or another Noble and the authority extends through their entire region.

Constable

A constable is an official charged with the enforcement of certain laws and regulations. Constables are primarily found in Towns and Cities where they compose the city watch or guard, but there are also Constables on the King's Roads in the Western Forests.

Members of a Royal or Noble Household

A Chancellor is the secretary to a Monarch or Noble – a most important member of the Royal or Noble household. A Chamberlain or Seneschal is an officer who manages the household; a chief steward.

Village Leaders

There are three roles which must be filled in each of the Kingdom’s villages: Censor, Reeve, and Yeoman. The Censor is responsible for keeping the village rolls, keeping records of land use, births and deaths, performing civil functions like weddings, and so on.  The Reeve is responsible for the productivity of the village and keeps the village’s currency. The Yeoman is responsible for the defense of the village, keeping order, and training the levy troops.

Collectively, these leaders are referred to as the Gentry.
