Just after commissioning in 1945 the brand new USS Askari (ARL30) sails out of the St. Johns River in Florida for it's first cruise to Norfolk, VA Note the camouflage paint job.

At anchor in Lake Union, Seattle, WA she flies a one star admiral's flag. The Sea Bee repair crew was converting an Alaskan fishing fleet to civilian use.

This was taken in the late 60's by one of the crew somewhere in Vietnam. The pitched-roof house atop the forward deck-house, they tell me was just a canvas to keep off the Nam rains during evening movies. The wheel-house, con, and mainmast were changes made on reactivation in 1966. Photo by Bill Grammer
