GM's NOTES

"There's random bad and random good"

-John Gorka

SETTING

"It's high noon everywhere you go."

-Pat Benatar

"Texorami was a wide open port city, with sultry days and long nights, lots of good music, gambling around the clock, duels every morning and in-between mayhem for those who couldn't wait."

-Random, Sign of the Unicorn

Think old time San Francisco with New Orleans' climate and parties and old style Las Vegas casinos. Its a place where steampunk technology meets magic and gunfighters. It's the kind of place where the Magnificent Seven and Maverick could meet Brisco County Jr. and James West and Artemus Gordon. The kind of place where Random can have a damn good time.

If you want to know anything about the rest of the world, ask me.

THE GAME

"I'd bet it all on a good run of bad luck "

-Clint Black

You're Random's buddies. Lord knows why. Naturally, there's gonna be trouble.

"To Live and Die in Texorami" is a game for creative and proactive players. This game is player driven. Be self-motivated. Have a goal, an agenda, or a plan. This is especially important as we have a large group of desperadoes.

There is a plot, but the GM wont be surprised if y'all cause so much trouble with your own crazy antics that it goes by the wayside. The GM is cool with it either way.

CHARACTERS

"Renegades, rebels and rogues. Eyes of fire. Hearts of gold."

-Tracy Lawrence

Characters will be gamblers, gunmen, musicians, and thieves-the kind of guys Random would hang out with. As Random put it, "Guys like me living around the edges of things."

Characters may be assigned to groups of either three or four characters. You might want to develop a group on your own. Again, given the size of the group, this may be quite important. The GM strongly encourages this option. More on this later, under "Extra Points".

Characters created before the Con will be built with 100 points plus possible bonuses (see below). Characters built at game will be built on 80 points and the GM may lynch you.

As far as points and stuff go, here are the basics:

RANKS & ATTRIBUTES

"There will always be a faster gun, but there will never be another one like you."

-Aztec Two-step

There are three Ranks.

You have 100 points to do with what you will. However, all of your Attributes begin at Sheriff Rank. Thus, selling down to Greenhorn Rank gives you 25 points and buying up to Gunslinger Rank costs you 10 points. Any points above and beyond those are your rank.

POWERS

"...we understand the power of the winning hand in a place where betting heart and soul can cost you everything."

-Hal Ketchum

Most characters will not have any magical powers. Those permitted are Sorcery and Power Words. If you want to propose something else - run it by me and we'll see what we can come up with. I've seen some wonderful Western variations on Power Words and Sorcery. I'd be happy to see some new ones.

CREATURES & ARTIFACTS

"I'm a cowboy. On a steel horse I ride."

-Bon Jovi

These are all fine (and encouraged), with the following restrictions:

  1. Must be in the theme of the Fantasy Western genre.
  2. No powers above those described in the rulebook on p. 67-72.
  3. Unless you're a sorcerer, you probably don't have anything with Shadow movement/manipulation capabilities.
  4. No Trump Artistry = No Trump Items.

ALLIES

"Ladies love outlaws."

-Hal Ketchum

Ally in Town - 1 Point - Someone in town is at least useful to you.
Friend in Town - 2 Points - Someone in town who actually likes you
Town Devotee - 4 Points - Someone in town is very loyal to you - willing to go to extreme lengths to aid you. Lord knows why

STUFF

"Luck is the lady that he loves the best..."

-Restless Heart

Stuff will be used to color your perceptions, your experiences, and the reactions of others. There is a maximum of 10 Points in Stuff.

BACKGROUND

"I'm a gambler
And I'm a runner
But you knew that
When you lay down

I'm a picture
Of ugly stories
I'm a killer
And I'm a clown"

-Alice Cooper

Describe your character, ranging from physical appearance to personality.
Your character should be able to answer the following questions:
Who are you?
What do you want?
Why are you here?
What do you have that is worth living for?
Who do you serve?
Who do you trust?

EXTRA POINTS

"Want to be a gun slinger?
No be a rock singer"

-U2

Yes, EXTRA points. here's how-

Character concepts which are completed and approved by deadline, will receive an extra 10 points for character creation.

I will also assign EXTRA creation points to characters with developed backgrounds and also to characters with strong connections to other characters.

CONTRIBUTIONS

In the unlikely event someone wants to do a game contribution before ACUS, I will assign extra points on a case by case basis.
