My first introduction to art was through children’s book illustrations of the 1940’s, characterized by strong black outlines and bright color.  Perhaps that is what drives the flat, decorative style I paint and draw in today.  My subject matter is primarily figurative, sometimes based on family memories of my childhood and my relationships.  The medium I work in is watercolor, gouache, pen and pencil.  Often I mix them together in layers creating a patterned style. - Margaret Benefiel
