Mary Ellen McNaughton’s artistic career began at the age of two years old when she did her very first drawing. At age eight, her father arranged to have her artwork on display in an old apt. building in Moscow to entertain his friends. After spending her childhood years in Europe and Washington DC, she moved to Grand Rapids, where her career blossomed. Her clay sculptures are hand built with meticulous care using coil, pinch pot, slab, and applied modeled clay. She is known for her mystical creatures and fantasy worlds that always have an extensive palate of glaze colors. Mary Ellen has had a following of collectors over the last 25 years, including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Valley State University, and The Muskegon Museum of Art. She also had her own art studio and gallery from 1994 to 2001 where she could get to know her collectors personally. Her love of art and its many forms has lead her to other avenues of expression such as mosaics and most recently painting. As she does in clay, her paintings offer a glimpse into her mystical world and connect the viewer to the mystery of life. She most recently had a solo exhibition of her paintings in 2004 at Gallery Arcadia and currently has her work on display at Art Beat Gallery in Grand Rapids. She continues to live in Grand Rapids where you may find her walking her dog, Lorca, looking for inspiration from nature.
