Artist Statement

Living in the south, especially in historic Savannah, Georgia provides a never ending source of artistic inspiration.  My paintings are my attempt to capture the beauty of the American South.  My recent artwork uses a combination of media to create a unique synthesis of drawing and painting techniques.  Paintings begin with an ink drawing to define the composition. Thin washes of acrylic paint are added to build up color.  I choose to use acrylic paint because it is adaptable to almost any surface: paper, canvas, or wood.  Acrylic paint also combines well with other media and is very fade resistant.  Colored pencils are used to complete paintings on wood or paper by adding an occasional accent of brilliant color.  Varnish is added as a final step to add texture and protect the finished painting. All media used is professional quality to create an enduring work of art.

Biography

Kim Milller grew up in West Virginia and received her formal education at the University of Kentucky in the 1970s.  While in school, she tried many different media as part of the curriculum.  It soon became clear to her that painting was what she was drawn to, especially using acrylic paints.  Acrylics are a very versatile polymer based paint that was perfect for the mural sized brightly colored paintings she did of wildlife and landscapes.  While working on her master's degree in art education she discovered that she could achieve similar effects using colored pencils.  She began doing large colored pencil drawings of landscapes and store displays, especially hats.  Kim's current work is a combination of the drawing and painting media she has enjoyed throughout her career.  Her subjects include historic Savannah, coastal marshes and beaches, as well as the forests and mountains she enjoyed as a child. Kim's paintings and drawings have been exhibited in galleries and juried exhibitions in Kentucky, Atlanta, and Savannah, Georgia.  Her work can currently be seen at The Gallery, located in City Market in Savannah, Georgia.

Kim has lived in Savannah, Georgia since 1997 with her husband Mark, son Daniel, and recently a lab mix named Nacho.
