Portrait CommissionsPortraits are the most popular kind of commissions Yasuro receives. This page, along with the subsequent pages, gives you how we handle portrait commissions. For other types of commissions, please contact us. Currently we are particularly interested in how we can provide more affordable pieces, such as small-size pieces in black and white pencil, or color reproductions of the originals. Also we will soon be accepting commissions for 3D, i.e.., sculptural, pieces. We will provide more information on this later, but if you are interested in these, we would be happy to talk about it with you. HighlightsBefore we go on, a little terminology: Sitter is the person or the animal portrayed in the portrait painting. The sitter and the client can be the same person, or different. For example, the client can be a daughter, who has commissioned a portrait of her parents. In this case, her parents are sitters. Now, here are some of the highlights of our portrait commissions. Not necessarily people only---pets tooPortraits are not just for people. Pet portraits are also our clients' favorite. They can be combined too; for example, a person and his/her pet. No long-time posing necessary; will work from photographsTraditionally, sitters posed in front of the artist for hours, days, weeks, or even months (hence the word). But not any more. Yasuro works from photographs: those you already have, those that he shoots specifically for the portrait (if he can), or both. It would be best if he could see the sitter in person, and take his/her/their photographs. More than one photograph can be combined and integrated into one painting; for example, one for the sitter, one for the object that shows the personality of the sitter, and one for the background. There are, however, complications in this. Please refer to a separate document on reference photos for details. Makes a great giftPortraits are a great way to capture people or pets that are special in your life, at a special time or event. You will be able to remember and commemorate it for years to come. It will also make a great gift to those who are going through a special occasion in life, such as graduation, marriage, childbirth, etc. A portrait is not a typical present; it will clearly distinguish you from others. They will appreciate and remember your thoughtfulness for a long time. Since a piece can be finished in a relatively short time, you might still be able to make it to that special occasion. There are more reasons why you want to have a portrait done by us. Pastel as the default mediumHis preferred medium is pastel. The choice is partially from its technical superiority, but it also provides other practical advantages. For one, unlike oil pieces, pastel pieces can be rolled up and put into tubes, conducing to easier and economical packaging and shipping. Graphite pencil and charcoal pencil is also an option for small-sized, detailed (but black-and-white) work. (See samples in our gallery -- more samples coming soon.) Colored pencil is expected to be added to the repertoire soon for small-sized color work. Short execution timeExecution time will depend very much on various factors such as the volume of other commission work at hand. However, the choice of pastel as the medium technically makes the execution time relatively short, because no drying time is necessary with pastel. With oil, it is just not possible to have a piece done in a week. Geographical distance not a problemEven if you are geographically remote from where we are, i.e., Seattle, Washington, USA, it is not a problem as long as you can provide us with good reference photos. We provide detailed instruction and tips on how to take good reference photos. We will also provide individualized assistance for your particular situations. Now DetailsWe will look at all the following aspects of the portrait commissions in a greater detail.
