Copyright

Lots of misconceptions are going on regarding copyrights. The purpose of this page is to make sure that there will not be any misunderstandings in this tricky area.

The US Copyright Law dictates the copyright, by default, will stay with the artist, the creator of the art piece, even after your purchase of it. You will have the physical entity of the artwork, but not its copyright. (See Section 202.)

What this means is, for one, is that the right to make reproductions will be continue belong to the artist. He is free to sell those reproductions and make profits if he wishes to. However, such a right too can be transferred to you by an additional agreement. Please contact us should you be interested in it.

In the international context, "there is no such thing as an "international copyright" that will automatically protect an author's writings throughout the entire world"; however, most countries do offer protection to foreign works under certain conditions, mostly by international copyright treaties and conventions such as the Berne Convention. See "Circular 38a: International Copyright Relations of the United States" for further information and a list of countries that maintain copyright relations with the United States.
