                                         Nanomaterials

General

The unique properties of nano-sized materials are due to their specific atomic structure, in particular that at the grain surface/boundaries.  This research focuses on ceramic materials, particularly diamond and SiC, and two main topics:

Nanograin

Fabrication of nano-composites

Producing nanocomposites is a technological challenge due to very high pressures (on the order of several GPa) required for the process.

Grain model

Determination of the atomic structure of nanosized grains

Those studies required development of a novel methodology of interpretation of the results of diffraction measurements, a common technique of determination of the atomic structure of (crystalline) materials.  Another novel approach in this research employed neutron diffraction.
