Rick Clement paints both in cubist and surrealistic styles. Ricks cubist paintings are usually of subjects he is most familiar with including instruments, animals and people. Clement begins with studies from life which enables him to become familiar with the subject. Presenting the viewer with plentiful visual information is one of the goals of the cubist approach. Rick also enjoys the play of the line and color as well as the illusion of volume and creating an element of surprise for the spectator. This was the approach for his painting “Shadow in the Night” a painting which won first prize in an art competition at Strathmore Hall Art Center, Bethesda, MD in the fall of 1995 Juror Frank Wright, Professor of Drawing at George Washington University. In his surrealist paintings Rick allows the subject to evolve from the subconscious. Without a subject in mind Clement will begin the painting with a free form line. As the work continues the line evolves into whatever suject it will become. “Woman and Wolf” was created with this approach. The 24x36” oil painting was selected to be in the “Mind and Eye” exhibit of paintings by contemporary Maryland artists. The Painting was on display in the Government House, Annapolis, MD as part of Marylands celebration of the arts in the Fall of 1999. Along with the shows mentioned Rick Clements paintings have been in numerous other exhibits. Rick Clement received his AA in Advertising Design from Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland, a BA in Studio Art from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland and has completed coursework in stone carving at the Student Arts League of New York in New York City, New York.
