Introduction: The prophetic Mayan Empire predicted that the world would end on December 22, 2012; but,
for Sharon Johnson
this day would prove to be the first time that she ever, truly, felt alive.

There are some things in life that people fear worse than death –
such as public speaking, airplanes, enclosed spaces, etc. Today is not such a case. The phenomenon that is gradually gripping the
entire world has given death an entirely new precedence.
Anthropologist SHARON JOHNSON awoke to her usual day of juggling
household chores, a token marriage, anti-depressants, an afternoon lover, the
anxiety of a shelved career, and her usual end-of-the-day “why can’t I get my
life together” face-off in the mirror.
However, Sharon discovered something novel about this Saturday.
Extreme weather, seismic activity, meteor showers, social unrest –
even the absence of chirping birds or the absence of insects can somehow all be
reasoned away by a person’s very clever and overprotective mind. But, when anthropologist Sharon Johnson
realizes the significance of the day’s date – December 22,
2012 – her blood
runs cold.
Anthropological research has credited the Mayan Prophecies with
accurately predicting natural phenomena and human behavior, as far back as 3114
B.C.: The total obliteration of Pompeii, the ruins of Greece and Rome, World
War I & II, the U.S. dustbowl and depression of the 1950’s, the social
aligning towards “one world order” at the second millennium…and, now, the
revelation of the Mayan Long Count Calendar that indicates that the current
cycle of human life, on Earth, will end on December 22,
2012!
As an abyss of darkness, heat and earth tremors descend upon the
globe -- as well as nation plotting against nation, under the cover of darkness and uncertainty -- Sharon is thrust into a panic of soul-searching
and self-inventory. In spite of the same
ill-fate for over a billion people on Earth, Sharon struggles as if her particular life
warrants some exception to the plight of the world. A life that had once seemed so difficult and
hard to comprehend, now appears so precious and full
of clear-cut, unfulfilled potential.
Although “2012” is based on the actual Mayan prophecies, “2012” is
more than just a prophetic piece. The
story “2012” serves as a metaphor on the journey of life. It illustrates the point of existence, the
maturation process, the illusion of man’s reality, and the necessity of
struggle as an indispensable tool for self-development and awareness. “2012” also poses unique perspectives into
our relationship with a Supreme Being.
Nonetheless, in the final analysis, even at the “Day of Judgment”
– there is a hope in Sharon that refuses to be stilled, in spite of her life’s choices. Sharon’s story forces the individual to reassess
– how did I become what I am today, what will I be when my journey has ended –
but, most importantly, what is “truly” the point of life and death?
