Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is the biggest change to Medicare in 40 years and it is quite confusing for older and disabled Medicare beneficiaries.

Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has established an Assistance Center to help Anne Arundel County Medicare beneficiaries through this "maze". The Medicare Part D Assistance Center is in the Heritage Complex on Riva Road. It is located in building 2666, Suite 110 (formerly the Credit Union suite).

Medicare beneficiaries can schedule an appointment and receive individual assistance and reliable answers to their questions.

Persons needing face-to-face assistance should call 410 222-4464 for an appointment. Transportation can also be provided to and from the Assistance Center.

Presentations can also be made to groups of Medicare beneficiaries.

For more information go to the county's Dept of Aging website; there is a also a flyer that you can post.

Park Maintenance Backlog

Dear Community Leaders & Residents:

Many of you have expressed interest in the parks' maintenance backlog, and when the county would work on it. Here is the plan for existing parks by district. It is a long honey-do list with something targeted in nearly every corner of the county.

The County is currently considering the budget by hearing explanations from the county departments on a daily basis. The budget must be passed by the end of this month, and becomes effective July 1, 2005.

County Executive's Proposed Budget Tackles Park Maintenance Backlog
$5.9 million Would Fund More Than 200 Projects

Annapolis (May 3, 2005) - To improve and enhance our Community Parks, County Executive Janet S. Owens' proposed FY 2006 budget includes $4.7 million in "one time" funding for 177 projects. "These funds will be used Countywide to make our parks even better places for our citizens to enjoy. These projects range from basketball court replacement at Freetown Park, to correcting chronic drainage problems at Cape St. Claire Park, to replacing outfield fences in Deale, and adding restrooms at Jug Bay's River Farm," Ms. Owens said. Hearings and Appeals

Your civic association receives volumes of mail from the county government listing hearings and appeals on property matters. Most of these items do not refer to the Shady Side area, but it is very time consuming to wade through them looking for items of interest to our community. All of this material is available on the county web site, but not easy to find. Therefore, we are providing a link here to the appropriate sites. They are regularly updated, so if you hear of an item of interest, simply use the "Find" feature of your browser to locate the item on the relevant page.

County Executive Signs Civil Citation Bill

Fines for building and land clearing violations increase significantly

Annapolis (June 25, 2004) - County Executive Janet S. Owens today signed Council Bill 37-04 which passed at Monday night's meeting. Bill 37-04 changes the schedule of fines for violations of the building and grading laws in the County.

Some of the more significant increases in the fines target construction of a pier or bulkhead without a permit, working over a stop work order, and unpermitted disturbance in the critical area. Fines now begin as high at $5,000 for unpermitted work in the critical area, for example, up from $500.00. A schedule of the changes is attached.

The increased fines are intended to discourage people from working without a permit in the critical area, working over a stop work order and working without permits in general.

The laws are enforced by the Department of Inspections and Permits. The public may report land-clearing activities and critical area work that may be in violation of the law by calling that agency at (410) 222-7777, the Environmental Hotline.

The fines were last updated in 2000. This legislation becomes effective August 9, 2004. For further information, visit the Anne Arundel County website at www.aacounty.org.
