Rec Cross Family Disaster Planning - 279 Kb County Continues Preparations for Hurricane Isabel
Announces Shelter Locations, Emergency Phone Numbers

Annapolis (September 16, 2003) - Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens today urged
residents to continue making preparations for Hurricane Isabel, including securing loose
objects, monitoring the storm's forecast and charging cell phones.

"There is still a great unknown about how Hurricane Isabel will affect Anne Arundel County,"
Ms. Owens said. "The best thing residents can do now is make preparations to 'shelter-in-place,'
secure loose objects in their yards, closely monitor the storm's forecast and charge their cell phones.
Please, check on your neighbors, particularly those who are elderly or disabled," Ms. Owens continued.

Information on "sheltering-in-place" is available in the County's Guide to Emergency Preparedness posted
on the County's web site, www.aacounty.org

Anne Arundel County, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will open four shelters throughout
the County for residents who live in storm surge areas or areas that are subject to inland flooding.
At this time, the shelters are tentatively scheduled to open at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2003.
However, residents should watch or listen to local news reports in case the storm necessitates changes
in the shelter opening times. Care-dependent residents should bring their care givers with them to the shelter,
as well as medications and oxygen (if needed). Only service animals, such as seeing-eye dogs,
will be permitted in the shelters. Every effort will be made to accommodate domestic pets at
an alternative site if residents are required to evacuate. If possible, residents are encouraged
to make alternative plans for their pets in advance.

The four shelters are:

Storm conditions may lead to the possibility of tornadoes.
It is very important to be familiar with the terms involved:
· A tornado Watch means that conditions are favorable for a tornado to occur.
Continue to watch tv or listen to the radio to see if there's anything to worry about.
· A tornado Warning means a tornado has been spotted or detected on weather radar
and could be coming your way.
Here's what to do if you see a tornado or are under a tornado warning:
· Get indoors.
· Go to a basement or interior room or hallway with no windows to protect yourself from flying glass.
· If you can't get inside, lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area.
· Follow all instructions given by emergency officials when a tornado threatens or strikes.
