Hale-Bopp Up Close
If you had the opportunity to see the comet through a small telescope you probably saw the hoods that are shown in here. From what I could gather the reason for their existence is because the comet's nucleus is spinning and one side of it is squirting out more gas and dust than the other. It is like a giant pin wheel.
This eye piece projection shot was done with a 40mm lens for 3 seconds.
