Comet Hyakutake, March 24, 1996

These piggy back shots were taken on the night of the comet's closest approach to the earth. The top picture crops the tail at about 30 degrees of length. I could see a 45 degree tail that same night. To put it into perspective you can see two stars at the end of the handle of the Big Dipper visible above the comet.

This was only night when the weather was clear enough to get a good look at the tail. The shots were taken in the mountains near Greenwater Washington.

I think Hyakutake was more beautiful than Hale-Bopp.

The bottom photo was scanned with a slide scanner and manipulated in Photoshop.
