M31 with a 200mm lens
At almost 3 million light years M31 is the most distant object that can be seen with the unaided eye. From a dark site the faint glow is easy to see over head. Use a star map to hop to it from Cassiopeia. M31 is a relatively large object in the sky. In fact it does not fit in the field of view of an f10 8 inch C8 at prime focus (the moon does, just look at the pictures). This is an excellent object for binoculars. Through a large aperture telescope the dust lanes seen in the picture become apparent. M32 and M110 are also visible in the picture.
This is a 20 minute piggy back shot on 800 speed film with a 200mm f4 lens.
