Riding in the Pine Barrens

Home of the JERSEY DEVIL

ACTUAL JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTING!!!

This poor guy was attacked by the JERSEY DEVIL!!! He noted that the beast had attacked the mighty truck and took off a wheel before it was spooked away by the ring of a screaming 250R to the rescue. The beast must have heard how dangerous threewheelers are!

Actually.....what can you say when you see a guy doing front wheel burnouts all day because he snapped his rear driveshaft. Well....you wait until he spits out his rear axel and has to be towed out of the pit. Always remember: If it IS broke, FIX IT!!

We started riding in the Jersey Pine Barrens in the late 1990's. Some friends told us that they had ridden there for years and it was great riding. When we first got there, we found miles of sandy, pine tree lined trials, dirt roads that were 4 lanes wide and huge sand pits. It was great. The place was HUGE. We made a few weekend trips over the past couple years. We would ride all day and party all night. The "locals" would show up at the pits in 4X4's sometime after midnight and go mud bogging. It was like late night entertainment.

Not like we were much better. Before we got all fancy with trailers, motorhomes and SUVs, we commuted to the Pine Barrens in a trusty U-Haul. It was a great tent, rain shelter, and low profile truck (to avoid "the law") to bring the bikes into the woods. We would pitch a tarp off the back of the truck and create an instant campsite. It sounds kind of stupid, but it turned out to be the best idea in the pits when a nasty storm tore through. We watched others struggle to set up tier tents in a torrential downpour while we were grilling burgers in our low tech box van. Everyone eventually piled in with us and waited out the storm.

ATC250R Fest in the Pine Barrens

We're usually the only people with threewheelers anywhere we go, but on one occasion, we ran into another group of 250Rs. It was a sight to see. Everyone was amazed to see that there are other die hard 250R fans out there. It was cool to see so many 250Rs in one place. They were a good bunch of guys and we should have kept in contact with them.

We may be a bunch of dorks, but we lined up for a couple pictures. It's not everyday that you run into a group of R's in the middle of the woods in New Jersey. Maybe the sand dunes, but not the Pine Barrens.

I have to admit it: The Pine Barrens offers some of the best riding in the PA,NJ,MD,DE and NY area. There are miles of hare scramble trails, wide open dragways, and huge pits with mud bogs and jumps. This place had everything and often had large crowds on the weekends. We used to race Banshees up the dirt road all day.

There was also a sighting of another rarely seen creature in the woods...The HondaSaki300.

Anyway. It's too bad, but this pit was shut down by the law a couple years ago. People can't respect the land they ride on, so we lost another great place to ride. We'll try to go back someday.
