Music for New Level 7 Optional
Once your daughter
reaches Level 7 they are required to select their own floor exercise
music. Each gymnasts selects music that represents their personality and
best expresses and showcases their skill and personal style. Each gym
has their own preference on the process of selecting appropriate music
for the new level 7 gymnasts. Some gyms will select the music for the
gymnast others will ask the gymnast and family to select options that
will be evaluated with the coach and finally settled upon by the coach.
At Brestyans the
gymnast is asked to select a couple of options themselves. Silvia will
finalize the selection once she and the gymnast both agree on a piece of
music.
Choreography
Choreography most
often is done by the floor exercise coach within your own gym. Some
gyms, however, will hire a specialty choreographer to come and do a
group of routines.
At Brestyans,
currently, Silvia is our choreographer. Please schedule time at the
front desk with the secretary. Choreographing new routines takes place
after the meet season has ended, during the summer.
Timing
Choreographing new
routines takes place after the regular season is over, this includes
states, regionals, easterns and nationals. This is during the summer …
time needs to be scheduled with the secretary at he front desk.
Typically the routine takes no more than 3 hours. During the time spent
learning the new routine the gymnast will be learning the dance steps,
leaps and jumps. The tumbling passes are not practiced during this time
– but eventually tumbling will be added as the dance becomes second
nature during regular practice.
How to Pick Music
CD Box at the Front Desk
There is a box with
CDs from several gymnastics floor music specialty companies at the front
desk. Please speak to the secretary regarding scheduling a time to take
this sample box home. You may select 2-4 options for Silvie to evaluate
– it’s easiest if you could burn your selections onto a separate CD so
the box may be returned to the desk for another family to pick music.
Resources for Music
There are several music specialty companies that produce music for floor
music routines. Below is a list of several that we have used in the
past. The list below contains companies that have pre-made music that
include the elements required musically and also the correct length for
the level of gymnastics. We know that optional music is 1:30 in length.
Prep-optional music is shorter at 1:22.

who have pre-made music, doing a search on the web for floor music for
gymnastics will pull up other options if you don’t find what you like in
the companies listed.
Custom Music
Sometimes it’s difficult to find a
pre-made song for floor routines; in this case you do have the option of
creating a custom song from any music that you find appealing. The
requirements of making custom music are that no voices are allowed,
except if the voice is acting as a single note. Words articulated are
not allowed anywhere in the floor routine music.
Below is a list of people we know who
will make custom music in the case that you need to do so. Typically
they will make your song and it will be yours exclusively for the year
and after that they will add it to their collection on their demo CDs.

Purchasing Music
Please make sure you have the following
copies of music for your gymnast. It’s important to have a few copies as
you may need it if one CD wears out or gets damaged. You don’t want to
be without music in a pinch and it has happened before at a meet where
the CD gets scratched or forgotten, etc. Having a backup with the
parents is always a good idea.
1 CD left at the gym for practicing
1 CD to travel with (coach may hold onto
this copy permanently)
1 CD extra to hold onto in case
something happens to the other copies
Hope this is helpful for your Optional
gymnastics adventures!
