The Movie was released on October 1st, 1968. The car used in the opening scene belonged to Russ Streiner's mother. After shooting the opening scenes, she wrecked the car, so they wrote that into the script. In the movie, the car simply pulls up next to the tree, but the camera angle and sound effects make it appear as if it has crashed into it. Voice over from the radio in the car was that of Karl Hardman. A few years after filming, a large storm ripped up several trees in the graveyard, and according to Russo, several bodies were unearthed as well. The stuffed animal heads in the living room of the farmhouse were provided by George Kosana, who also played Sheriff McClellan. A majority of the furniture in the house was purchased at the local goodwill for a total of 50 dollars. The music box belonged to Vince Survinski's daughter, but the sound effect used for it came from a music box owned by Kyra Schon's grandmother. The Farm house they used was about to be torn down. The house has since been destroyed and a cabin is now present. George made the skull at the top of the stairs. He used a Rovell skull model kit bought from a hobby shop, and added clay and ping pong ball eyes. The farmhouse had no running water, so they had to carry buckets of water from hundreds of yards away so that they could flush the toilet. No permission was given to film in DC. The car used in DC is a 1965 Lincoln Continental that belonged to Karl Hardman. The crowbar that Ben uses came from the trunk of that car. Also, George Romero filmed the sequence where Judy O'Dea is running down the dirt road while sitting in the trunk of the same car. Russ Streiner filmed the DC scenes. Ben was originally scripted as a country truck driver, with some street smarts. Rudy Ricci (who played the head biker in Dawn of the Dead) was originally going to play Ben. Duane Jones was cast as Ben after an audition that impressed the producers. The script was then changed a little to reflect the fact that Ben is obviously not a redneck. Rudy Ricci played the zombie who got dragged by the truck. Judy O’Dea wore a wig throughout the entire movie. The voice of the Radio announcer is that of Chuck Craig. He also played the TV news host. The door to the basement was cut into the wall by Vince Survinski, and didn’t really lead to the basement. The house did have a basement but it was too damp and dismal so they used the basement at the Latent Image Studios. The door that was cut into the wall actually led to a part of the kitchen. The corpse that gets pulled away upstairs is played by Kyra Schon. Judy Ridley was the former secretary for Hardman Studios, and later worked for The Latent Image. Their current secretary, Paula Richards, played the night gown zombie, and was in the background of the news studio. The Newsroom scenes were filmed in studio A at the Karl Hardman Studios. Ross Harris owned the butcher shop that supplied the intestines and innards for the zombie feast scene. He also was in the background of the news studio. Frank Doak played the TV scientist, and was vice president of Hardman Studios. 2 Chevy trucks were used, the first one we see never actually ran. The 2nd one was owned by someone on set and it was used for all the driving scenes (notice the truck has headlights again!). The 1st truck was used again for the explosion. Bosco Chocolate Syrup was used for blood when Karen was chewing on her father's arm. The arm was a sandwich. Black Paint was used as blood when Karen stabbed her mother. Kyra stabbed the trowel into a pillow/ Judy Ridley and Russell Streiner were once married, and have two children. Karl Hardman is Kyra Schon's father. Duane Jones
