SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
Look for some immediate changes in our Pro Shop and/or management employee status as things are not going well with our Club golf management and someone will have to bite the bullet. The new Club Manager and his staff have not accomplished anything that enhances our membership.
This is a reminder that our Third Quarterly SMGA meeting will be held on July 16, 2008 after the golf outing. If we get rained out, the meeting will proceed at 8:30 am. This announcement has been posted in the member’s lounge for the past several weeks.
At our last meeting in April, I requested Russ Stoneman to head up a group of interested members to review our manner of determining our Senior individual champion golfer of the year award. Russ and his group held a meeting and voted on a proposed change to our existing rule and submitted it to me. I reviewed the proposed change and the differences that existed in the group as to what should be done. I determined on my own that this was not the solution that most “A“ players and and some of the “B” players wanted to accomplish. I tabled the proposal and talked to the Executive Committee to get their opinion before proceeding further. I arrived at the conclusion that this is too important an issue to try and implement this year because we are approaching the schedule dates to begin our individual tournament dates to determine this year’s Senior champion. I hope to have additional discussions with the Executive Committee and several other members as well as observing what other SMGA clubs are doing to determine their Club Champion and have a proposal for future consideration. This is all open to discussion at our next meeting on July 16. Any member desiring to voice their views on the matter are welcome to e-mail me.
I would like to hear from our A and B players about having to play from short tees as was the case at Bowie a few weeks ago. This seems to be a trend as it has occurred at other MISGA events in the last two years. I personally would like to have MISGA set the rule that A and B players must play from the white tees at all MISGA events. That would set the course up the way it was meant to be played for those able to handle same. It also would make it easier for the Pro or whoever is in charge of tallying the scores if all A & B’s were playing the same tees and not just a few who elected to do so.

SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
Well, well, what’s new, another new Club Manager. Almost impossible to achieve any ongoing rapport with Management when they change so often. The new manager is Chad Carden. He was in food management with another of our Owner’s Clubs and is just learning the ropes about running the golf aspects of our Club. It will be awhile before we will see if he can do anything with the food services that we would like to see happen. There should be no change to our MISGA or non-misga Wednesday outings, especially food. The bar will be open on Wednesdays when we finish and should be serving hamburgers and hotdogs along with your favorite beverage.
The course is in good shape except for the excessive rough and hard greens that have not shown any degree of grass growing. I have voiced the concerns to Management about the length of the rough and the slow play it is dictating along with the lack of fun it is trying to get out of the pastures that accompany our fairways. The Club can save on maintenance and speed up play while having a reasonable rough that it is less than the current mess.
There is a change to our SMGA tournament schedule that I will pass along and it will be posted as a correction on our bulletin board. The normal Closing Day Scramble which features our banquet and awards activity, will be held on October 29, 2008 and not November 5, and listed on the schedule. There will be a couple of other schedule changes to our non-misga tournament events that we will address as the year progresses. This is not due to anything Al has done but in keeping with the desires of some members, including me, who are looking at some new ideas involving the method of determining our Club Champion and what to do with open tournament dates. I have the report from the Committee I appointed to look into this selection method and will submit something shortly to the membership for review.Mike Lavelle, President

SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
Our next quarterly SMGA meeting will be held on April 2, 2008, our opening day. The meeting will be held immediately after completion of the golf outing unless weather causes a postponement of the golf. In that case we will meet at 9:00 and proceed with the meeting. Not much has been going on since our last meeting in January. The PGCC Board of Directors meetings have been primary concerned with finalizing the Men’s and Women’s Tournament schedule for year 2008. I have submitted our revised information for the SMGA page included within the PGCG Tournament Booklet (due out in April). A meeting was held a few days ago for all golfers interested in participating in the Men’s golf league played on each Tuesday or Wednesday from middle April through August. Any Seniors interested in joining should check the information and sign-up sheets in the Members Lounge.
John Haggerty and Al Wilder have posted our SMGA tournament schedule for 2008 on our Bulletin Board in the Members Lounge. Both our MISGA and NON-MISGA events are listed for your planning in the upcoming months. It is another great schedule and hope we can have a high turnout for all events. There may be some minor changes to our non-misga schedule and those revisions will be posted when finalized. We have some new SMGA members and they will be introduced at our April meeting.
Work continues at the golf course in preparation of the coming season and I have noticed significant improvements in the sand traps and filling in bad spots in the fairways. Work around the edges of the greens on several holes will allow us to have a better surface for different shot selection and even putting from off the greens. The Course will be in good shape when we open our season in April.
Earl Gentry will give a short presentation of rule changes concerning the Club and the PGA for 2008 at our April meeting. Bring your questions or e-mail to me prior to the meeting and I will pass on to Earl for response in April.
Another golf rule AARP is attempting to negotiate with the USGA to modify the rules of golf for Seniors: Rule 2.d.6(b) - A ball hitting a tree should be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled had it not hit the tree and can play the ball from there.
My tidbit for the month: Don’t forget for those seniors who do not normally file a tax return, you must file a return to receive your economic stimulus payment. You can download the required form by going to the IRS website (IRS.com). Since the form must be signed, you cannot complete the transaction on the website. PS: I don’t have any forms.

WE HAVE A NEW CLUB MANAGER, BRAD COMPTON, AS OF A WEEK AGO. I HAVE MET AND TALKED WITH HIM AND HE IS CORDIAL AND EXPERIENCED WITH CLUB MANAGEMENT AND THE CURRENT CORPORATION’S METHOD OF DOING BUSINESS. I HAVE ASKED HIM TO INTRODUCE HIMSELF AND SPEAK TO OUR GROUP AT OUR JANUARY 23RD MEETING. HE MAY HAVE INSIGHT ON ANY NEW BENEFITS THAT WILL AFFECT THE SENIORS THIS YEAR. THIS FIRST SMGA QUARTERLY MEETING IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE WILL BE APPROVING OUR 2008 BUDGET AND LOOKING AT IMPROVING OUR COMING GOLF SEASON. I AM PROPOSING SOME CHANGES TO OUR BY-LAWS THAT NEED TO BE REVISED AND THERE ARE A FEW RULE OR PROCEDURE CHANGES THAT WILL BE PRESENTED FOR MEMBERSHIP APPROVAL. A LITTLE ADVANCED NOTICE FOR YOUR REVIEW AND PREPARATION OF COMMENTS BEFORE THE MEETING:
1. PROPOSAL TO END GIFT CERTIFICATES FOR ALL NON-MISGA EVENTS.
2. REVIEW THE RULE CONSIDERING NUMBER OF NON-MISGA EVENTS THAT MAKE ONE ELIGIBLE FOR OUR SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.
3. REVIEW THE METHOD FOR DETERMINING OUR CLUB CHAMPION.
PLEASE BRING YOUR PAYMENT FOR 2008 FEES IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY PAID THE $15.00. WE ALSO NEED ANY INFORMATION CHANGE FOR MEMBERS BEFORE WE GO TO PRESS WITH OUR SENIOR BOOKLET.
THIS SHOULD BE A LIVELY MEETING AND I URGE YOU TO ATTEND.

SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!
We closed a very successful year for our group of Seniors with the culmination of a nice end of year banquet shared with several of the ladies of the LGA . We were able to obtain an AED for the Club with the financial assistance of the LGA and MGA memberships. This was a major accomplishment and an article appeared in the MISGA newsletter mailed last week . Our hope is that other Clubs involved in MISGA will take motivation from us and pursue AED’s for their respective clubs. I want to take this time to thank everyone in our association who has assisted me this past year and helped to make our year together something special. I remember thinking back when I first joined the SMGA that my primary reason was to participate in the MISGA events and play other nice golf courses. And while this a still a major reason I enjoy my membership in SMGA, I have found something much more important, the many friendships with other seniors and good times participating in our weekly golf outings. We have a great group of seniors and I am happy to be able to help in the direction of our ongoing activities. Both my wife and myself are very grateful for all the support and concern that many of you have expressed for her illness and the prayers offered for her recovery.
Back to being President, I look forward to this coming year and expect us to have a great year and will offer up some surprises that I hope you will enjoy. Our Executive Committee will meet on January 9, at 9:00am to develop a budget for fiscal 2008 . Our first SMGA Quaterly meeting will then be held on January 23, 2008 to discuss and approve the budget and some other important items that will be proposed. If you have not paid your membership dues for 2008, please do so as soon as possible. We need a reliable count of members to put together a correct budget and associated expenses. Send your payment to Carl Ridenour, our Treasurer, at 12915 Holdridge Road, Silver Spring, Maryland 20906. If we do not receive your dues by January 7, a $10.00 late fee may be imposed. There is no good reason not to have your dues paid by this date. If there is some problem, please call me. Also, if your address, phone number or e-mail address has changed please inform Byron Keadle and John Haggerty prior to January 15, because we need the correct information for our SMGA booklet which will be in the process of completion.
You should have received your annual letter from Patuxent Greens CC management and it is self explanatory. A number of continued good things being done to the golf course. I have nothing more to report because there has not been a PGCC Board meeting for several months. There is a members night activity on December 17, 2008 and information on it is posted in the Club.
If any of you have suggestions for our coming year, please contact me prior to our budget meeting so they can be considered. With each of my messages this coming year, I will pass on a couple of the rules of golf that AARP is negotiating with the USGA to modify for seniors.
Rule 1.a.5- A ball sliced or hooked into the the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the rough with no penalty. The senior should not be penalized for tall grass which groundskeepers failed to mow.
Rule 3.b.3(g)- There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging him or herself with a penalty stroke.
More to come.

SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
Purchase of our AED has been finalized and training has been scheduled for September 24, in the meeting area of the Club starting at 9:30 am and commencing around 11:30 or 12:00. If you are interested in receiving training with the AED, please notify Byron Keadle [b.keadle@comcast.net] as soon as possible as training allotment is limited. One of the main reasons we were able to finally purchase the AED was the generous donation of $700.00 from the PGLGA (Patuxent Greens Ladies Golf Association). I have personally thanked their membership on your behalf and a copy of my letter is attached for your information. To read letter, click here.
I am reviewing our budget for this fiscal year and our current cash on hand and it appears that we will have ample money to hold our annual closing day banquet. If the Club management cannot provide a suitable dinner arrangement for us within our available monies, then we may have to move the banquet to another facility. I have had Russ Stoneman, our Vice President, looking into several outside eating facilities and he has obtained some good information to aid in our decision.
The next PGCC Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 19 and I will report to you any significant matters that are discussed.

MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT [#7]
SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
I called the Executive Committee together for a meeting after our August 15 golf outing to finalize plans for our purchase of an AED. As you are aware, (if you have been reading any of these communications) Fore Golf has approved our request to place an AED at Patuxent Greens C.C. Also in attendance at the meeting was Byron Keadle and John Haggerty who gladly added their expertise on AED’s. It was decided to purchase the AED through Milton Zepp who will provide us with the special MISGA price, handle the necessary paperwork dealing with application, notification and various approvals required. He will probably handle the training as well. The overall cost, including everything required, will run around $2,400. The Ladies Golf Association at Patuxent has offered a substantial gift of money to help us in the purchase. I will work out the details with them in the coming week. Almost all of the Club employees will undergo AED training and ongoing training will be provided for expected turnover. I discussed with Brad Bean, our Club Manager, about a proper place to house the AED and it will probably be kept in the Bar area with appropriate AED identification on display.
We finally had a PGCC Board meeting on August 15 (the first for several months), and a summary of topics discussed is listed below for your review. There were only four members in attendance, Bradford Bean, Manager, myself, Jerry Moxley and Bob Tomko.
l. Brad acknowledged my letter requesting the Seniors be allowed to walk on Fridays before 2:00pm and after lengthy and tense discussion was turned down. Moxley had requested a reconsideration of the walking provisions for Club members on the weekends before 2:00pm and it was also turned down after another long discussion. The owners of the Club do not anticipate any other infringements on our walking privileges during the other weekdays.
2. I asked Brad about the new rules concerning tee times for members and they are going to hold to their new procedures allowing four member times and four public tee times each hour. This does not affect our Wednesday Senior day outings.
3. Other requests by the Board members concerning benches being placed near tees for walkers, more control over public dress, to monitor slow play by the public, were all turned down.
4. A note of importance for planning next week’s golfing, the course will be undergoing aeration, and seeding of both the greens and the fairways beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 22 and concluding around the 24th. Arrangements have been made for anyone who wants to travel to Tantallon for golf on Sat or Sun. Call the Pro Shop for a tee time. Special cost is $25 (includes cart).
5. The trap on the left side of hole #17 will soon have sand and will no longer be an area considered ground-under-repair.
6. More work this fall will involve trying to get the rough in better shape, especially around the greens. Also more sod will be put down under better weather conditions. More sand is coming for the bunkers and maybe additional work to make hole #8 more playable.
7. Drainage work to be put on hold until sometime in 2008. That may be due to the need for new equipment.
Not much good news for members but at least our views were expressed. The Board made reference to the fact that some members have already resigned and there may be others by the end of the year but Brad said the owners expect that and will just replace the lost members with new ones. Another membership drive is expected this fall/winter.

Good news !! I met with Bradford Bean, Patuxent Greens CC Manager, today and both he and the Club owners have agreed to place an AED at Patuxent Greens CC. I will be calling a special meeting of the Executive Committee and include both Byron Keadle and John Haggerty to make arrangements for the purchase, training and placement of our AED. This is a major accomplishment for our SMGA and have thanked Brad for his work in behalf of our Association. I will get back to our members with final details when they are worked out. MESSAGE FROM THE

SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
This message is to update you with the latest changes going on at Patuxent Greens CC that impact our Senior Group as well as other members.
As the President of the SMGA I attend the Board of Advisors Meetings each month for PGCC and I then relate to you the actions of these meetings. First of all, the Board members have been reduced to five; Brad (Club Manager) has eliminated the handicap, rules, and social committee members. This leaves Jerry Moxley, Chairman, Bob Tomko, representing the MGA, Mike Lavelle, representing SMGA, Carrie Lawn, representing the LGA and Bob Krueger, acting Secretary. Another member may be added at a later date. During the last meeting in April, information was communicated to Brad that the lack of food service and bar being open only on Wed and Fri is a major detriment to the members. Our members are not recommending PGCC to potential members because of this lack of service. Out-sourcing the food service is not an option due to the need to keep the kitchen open for banquets and weddings. (where the real money is) There was talk of returning the grill service at the turn at hole # 1.
At the request of members of the BOA, the rules governing membership and play at PGCC will be put on the Website for your review. Also, the PGCC Tournament schedule and rules is due to appear on the website as soon as it is finalized. Neither of these will be mailed to the membership.
Ongoing work continues to make the course in great playing shape. A major change is taking place on hole # 6, where the waste bunker is being replaced with an all grass front to the green.
A new Club rule requires you to ride on Fridays, Sat and Sun prior to 2:00 pm. I have met with Brad concerning our SMGA members who have always walked on Friday and requested an exception for our group. It was denied and we then discussed a possible Trail Fee, allowing us to pay a small fee to continue to walk on Fridays. Brad is seeking approval for this exception and to keep the fee small somewhere near $6 or $8. He should have the answer by our Board meeting scheduled for May 21.
I wish I had more good things to report to you concerning our Club Management but the Ownership is a Corporation looking to make as much profit as possible until some date when they decide to sell. That means very little goodwill will be forthcoming to the Club membership unless it fits in with their profit motives. If any of you have ideas or suggestions for our SMGA and our dealings with the Ownership please let me know via our e-mail arrangement.

SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
This is the third of our communication messages and will attempt to answer areas concerning minor problems with the Club management and to respond to rumors involving our SMGA activities.
l. Contrary to rumors abounding that the Seniors will not have lunch available each Wednesday outing, lunch will be available. It may not be the same type of lunch we have had in the past, but we will have an ample variety of items including soups. We will have more on this item at our April 4, meeting.
2. Our newly created tee times have not changed from what I reported in my last message to SMGA members. They remain: 8:30 am for the month of April, 8:00 am for the months of May through October and 9:30 am for the winter months of November through March. There was some confusion with the Pro Shop as they did not get the correct message from Brad and thought that our tee times in March of this year would be 8:00 am. So for the remaining two Wednesdays, March 21 and March 28, seniors will tee off at 9:30am without a shotgun start. Everyone goes off tee number 1.
3. Our SMGA opening day is scheduled for April 4, 2007 and we will have our 2nd quarterly meeting after golf is completed. This date is posted on the SMGA bulletin board and the telephone committee (as revised this year) will notify each member who does not have internet access.
4. Club management is adamant about handling all aspects of the MISGA events at PGCC and they will handle cart assignments, bag drops, and other preparatory functions, including donuts and drinks.
5. The PGCC Tournament Booklet is being finalized and should be e-mailed to each member within the next few weeks. Members without internet service will have to pick up a copy of the Booklet at the Club. John Haggerty reports that our own Tournament Booklet is completed and we should be able to distribute it on April 4.
Don’t forget, you can always e-mail me about nuisance rumors or other items that concern you and may affect other SMGA members.

MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT [#2]
SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
In our continued efforts to communicate ongoing items of importance to SMGA members, I am providing the following information for your review.
1. If you were looking at an early copy of the SMGA Tournament schedule for 2007, the Ocean City Spring Fling is listed on May 7, 8 and 9. This date is correct. The MISGA May 8 date has been re-scheduled to May 4. The SMGA Individual by flight as shown on May 9 will be moved to a date later in the month. A different SMGA event will be held on May 9. I urge anyone who might be interested in the Ocean City Fling to make your reservation now. It is a fun event held on two challenging courses and we would like more of our SMGA members to join us.
2. Effective with our April 4 Opening Day Scramble Tournament, our senior tee times will change from 9:00 am to 8:30 am for the month of April. Our tee times for the months of May 1 through October 31 will change from 8:30 am to 8:00 am. The tee times for the rest of the year will remain the same at 9:30am. Players must check in at least 30 minutes before the scheduled tee time so that the tournament director has adequate time to make adjustments in teams for no shows and cancellations. Anyone who does not check in prior to 30 minutes before the announced tee time will not be placed on a team and thus will not play with SMGA on that day. We have had to install these time changes and to enforce our sign-in requirements because our senior group has been late getting started and is causing problems with the Club and their assigned tee times for the public. It was these changes or the possibility of requiring carts for everyone and/or not being able to have our shotgun starts. I believe that we can resolve the problem within our own SMGA group with the above changes.
3. Please do not forget to sign in with the Pro Shop prior to each time you play the course. Anyone caught not signing in will be charged a full 18 hole green fee. As far as I know only one person to date has been charged.
4. There is no longer a Wed or Fri happy hour rate. The Club Lounge is still open for all normal services.
5. The golf course maintenance work continues at a good pace even with all the bad weather. Work has been completed around the 17th tee box and the adjoining ponds and looks good.
6. Although some food availability has been curtailed at the Club, we have been able to negotiate a continuance of our luncheon items for our SMGA Wednesday outings. And of course, the MISGA events will have their regular lunch as provided in the past.
Thank you for your feedback concerning this vehicle for enhancing our communication process within SMGA. All of the responses to me have been very positive and I will continue to work with the Executive Committee and others to keep information coming to you as often as possible.
Thanks, Mike

SENIOR MEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION (SMGA)
The following is information that I deem important to relay to members of PGSMGA in order to keep you informed of Club and SMGA current activities.
The SMGA first quarterly meeting was held on January 17, 2007 in the members lounge at 9:30 a.m. Besides the executive committee, there were approximately 15 members present. The weather was not very good and henceforth no golf was scheduled for the day. That probably accounted for the small turnout of members, plus some possible communication problems. The proposed SMGA budget for fiscal year 2007 was submitted by the executive committee and was approved by the members in attendance. You will be able to review the approved budget (if you so desire) as part of our new internet communication program that we will have completed soon. Our budget for 2007 was calculated on having 55 SMGA members. We are a little short of that number and solicit each of you to help recruit new members to enhance our great organization.
Most of the remaining time at the quarterly meeting was spent on my presentation of the PGCC Board of Directors meeting of January 8, 2007. Club improvements to the golf course was the major item of discussion including: The walkway to enable players to cross over the drainage ditch on hole 17 has been completed. A lot of work involving improvement of drainage problems between holes 4, 6 and 7 is planned; work similar to that with the rocks around hole 18 is planned for the 17 tee boxes and pond; the problem with the dirt piles on the right side of the tree line approaching hole 13 will be repaired; much more sod will be put down mainly for drainage purposes (especially on hole 10) and many other smaller items of improvement are planned.
The Club management is involved in a big promotion drive to recruit new members and have reached a total of 191 as of two weeks ago. Two items I was to pass on to our senior group: l. Do not go back of the bar to retrieve anything. There is a scanner in place and anyone caught going back of the bar will be suspended. The reason is a significant amount of liquor theft. 2. Make sure you check into the pro shop prior to beginning any round of golf, even if it is only 9 holes or less. The Club gets additional maintenance monies for every round listed for the course and that benefits all of us.
Carl Ridenour and I met with Brad (Club manager) to finalize costs for the MISGA events held at PGCC and were able to negotiate a significantly lower price per player than originally proposed by the Club. Our fee this year for the MISGA events will be $35.00.
I also met with Brad at a later date and he has agreed to allow us to determine our own method of selecting our senior club champion and other flight winners. So in 2007, we will return to our old method of selection and Al has put these Individual tournaments in our weekly schedule of events.
I hope you welcome this new communication tool that will allow me to relay valuable information to each of you (with internet access) in between quarterly meetings or if you miss a meeting you will be able to catch up here. I will set up an internet connection in order for you to ask questions of me or to seek information you desire and will attempt to respond within a satisfactory time period.
Thanks, Mike
