Renouncing membership in the Republican Party
[Letter submitted to RNC Chairman Richard Richards, 2 April 1982]

Dear Sir:

After having been a member of the Republican Party for many years, I have come to a sad conclusion. [Here Mr. Bakierowski makes reference to a "Readertorial" letter to the Holland Sentinel that does not seem to be among the papers included for this Web site.]

Today, America is on the verge of catastrophe. (Since arriving in the U.S.A. in 1952, I predicted this, and I warned about it by writing in newspapers and to politicians, but nobody cared enough to listen and pay attention.) If President Reagan cannot save this country, America, with the help of liberals in the Supreme Court, unions, Senate, and Congress, who work hard to undermine the President's efforts, will become just an enslaved Russian colony. Those liberals, as you well know, do not all belong only to the Democratic Party, but some are Republicans!...

Years ago I contributed money to the effort to remove Mr. Church from office ... and he was replaced by Mr. Percy!* At that time, Mr. Percy's ACU voting record was lower than that of Mr. Church!... And to think that such as Mr. Riegle and Mr. Anderson once also were Republicans!... There is another fact: In many instances the voting records of certain Republican Senators and Congressmen can only be compared with that of the most lousy records of liberals from the Democratic Party!... Recently, I received the invitation to join President Reagan's Task Force. President Reagan needs all the help he can get, but since Senator Packwood (who has only a 42 ACA rating and who already twice opposed the President) was made Chairman of that Task Force, I refused membership....

Millions of Americans of both parties, directed by common sense, give the President their support, but it seems that he cannot count on the support of all Republican Senators and Congressmen....

Some Senators and Congressmen are up for re-election in November, and already now some of them have considered that as their reason not to support the President at this time. America is falling to pieces, and our President is trying to save our country, whereas certain Senators and Congressmen seem to be not interested in America, but only in voter appeal to be re-elected.

After having considered this entire matter very carefully, I feel that I have no choice but, with this letter, to declare myself as an Independent Republican. Therefore, instead of sending my dollars to the Republican Party, I will contribute to the PACs, requesting them to use that money equally to remove Democrats Mr. Kennedy, Mr. O'Neill, Mr. Moynihan, and others, the same as certain Republicans like Mr. Percy, Mr. Weicker, etc., from office, with the hope that their replacements will be of a better Republican caliber.

Though I cannot support the Republican Party per se, I pledge my support to individuals loyal to the President, like Senators Goldwater, Helms, Thurmond, Baker, and others; they can count on me for whatever help I can give them in their efforts.

President Reagan always had, and will have in the future, my fullest support!

Yours very truly,
Waclaw Bakierowski.

P.S. I am sorry that, taking the entire catastrophic situation into consideration, the President will not declare martial law, send the Senate and Congress home, and govern the country by executive order!

* The liberal Republican Percy assumed chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from the liberal Democrat Church.
