Opposition urged to holiday honoring Martin Luther King
[Letter to President Reagan, published in the Holland Sentinel, 6 August 1983]
Sir:
Enclosed is a copy of a photo taken at a Communist training school in Tennessee. The person on the far right is Martin Luther King! There is also a copy of a check, payable to Martin Luther King, issued by an official Communist front and signed by two identified Communists. And this is just one of many payments to him from the sworn enemies of our country!
And yet, on August 2, the Congress voted in favor of declaring a Martin Luther King national holiday. Shame on Congress! Senator Mathias even introduced legislation to celebrate King's actual birthday as a national holiday. To date, only the birthdays of Christ, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln have been celebrated as national holidays in America, but now Senator Mathias intends to add the birthday of a Communist. Shame on him!
The members of the Council on Foreign Relations dream about a one-world government in union with their Communist brothers. The American Catholic bishops support [Soviet premier] Mr. Andropov's idea for a nuclear freeze. Other churches support the Communists through the National Council of Churches. American schools are under Marxist influence. The government uses tax money to support Communists like Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden. What has happened to American patriotism, honor, and decency?
Mr. President, if America does not wake up now, the day will come when, instead of national holidays honoring Christ and George Washington, we will have a national holiday on Lenin's birthday!
[Editor's Note: References followed to black organizations opposed to a King holiday.]
Mr. President, I urge you to speak out on this subject, and I urge you not to sign the bill that will give America its first Communist national holiday.
[Webmaster's Note: He did anyway, thus one more proof that his memory is overrated by nostalgic conservatives languishing in the post-Clinton era.]
