God, America, and the
Supreme Court
[Letter submitted to the Holland Sentinel, 6 February
1980]
In the Pledge of Allegiance are the words UNDER GOD ...
In the Declaration of Independence we have the words LAW OF NATURE, OF NATURE'S GOD, and CREATOR and DIVINE PROVIDENCE ...
In the Constitution it reads, in the very end, that it was done IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 1787 ...
The First Amendment states: CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING AN ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF ...
Democracy is a rule of the majority, and the majority of Americans BELIEVE IN GOD ...
Presidents, Senators, Congressmen, and judges swear to perform their duty and SO HELP ME GOD ...
In court you swear that you will say the truth and SO HELP ME GOD ...
And there are many more examples that could be cited along this line, but suddenly ... a few "wise guys" from the Supreme Court forbade prayer in schools!... How they arrived at that decision is a mystery. They should not only be governed by the above but are the custodians and should protect and preserve these words and their application to our lives. But apparently, their special brains are too busy with dialectics and formalities that they arrive at conclusions which the common sense of the common citizen is not able to reach and to understand....
So now we are faced with a gloomy situation: we must respect the Supreme Court's decision, but we cannot respect the originators of that decision....
One can only wonder that the Supreme Court judges, after throwing out the school prayer, accept their salary in dollar bills which are inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST....
The Roman law lasted more than 1000 years as the foundation for the teaching of law because of its clarity, simplicity, and common sense. I have my doubts that the decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court will last that long!...
