Letter to Patrick Buchanan (11 February 1992)

Dear Sir:

In the past, I have sent you copies of some of my letters to the President and to others, but I never received a single comment from you. I trust that I will be more "lucky" in the future....

In response to your appeals for donations, I am sending two symbolic $5 checks; I am retired and on a fixed income and cannot afford more. I would like, however, to make some comments.

Mr. Bush?! I disagree with him on his policies and performances; I consider his "New World Order" treason to the Constitution and to America; I consider the Persian Gulf war a lost war because Mr. Bush stopped it prematurely without removing Hussein; his economic activity, supported by the CFR, big industry and international banks, is a disaster. If Mr. Bush should remain the final candidate of the Republican Party, I will not vote for him, but for Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck!

The situation in America and the world as a whole is dangerous and becoming catastrophic. People are beginning to "feel it through the skin," but not many know what the problem is. If America is to survive, extraordinary action will be required. I have heard you attacking Mr. Bush and I have agreed with every word you said, but that is not enough. I would like to hear your plans for changing the situation. This is a touchy problem; Americans are willing to listen to descriptions of their illness, but are they willing to pay attention to any prescription which is not completely painless? Speak openly and, I am afraid, you will lose votes. Among the reasons: "free" Americans (greedy millionaires) who do not want limitations on their profits, "free" Americans (the so-called poor) who do not want cuts in their entitlements, and "free" Americans (the working class) who insist on being paid more than they are worth. And, of course, "free" Americans who fornicate, abort, produce pornography, promote atheism and immorality, and do everything possible to debase and degrade their fellow Americans.

An episode sticks in my mind from 1952, shortly after I arrived in America. Every morning, at about 5:00 AM, a certain "gentleman" would wake the entire neighborhood by blowing his car horn to inform his friend that he was waiting to give him a ride to work. When I questioned my neighbors, I was told that America is a free country, so the man can do what he wants. This is the American idea of freedom? That anyone can do anything he wants? Insignificant in itself, this incident epitomizes one of our problems: we have absolutized freedom and made it a good in itself, divorced from morality, law, responsibility, and even common courtesy.

The American Constitution created a federal republic with a limited central government. Today all that I hear about is democracy. In fact, we are not even a democracy, let alone a federal republic. We live under the absolute power of a minority in the CFR, in big business, in the banks, in the media, in the courts, in the Washington bureaucracy, in the foundations, and in Congress.

Using "freedom" and "equality" as their slogans, this minority — with the passive consent of a confused or indifferent majority — dethroned God and created a destructive and immoral liberalism. This is rapidly destroying our families, our schools, our economy — and our country. Let us look at some examples.

Education. We have about 40 million functional illiterates. Even when not illiterate, graduates of our schools are ignorant of history, geography, literature, mathematics, and the sciences. The kind of education which I received in pre-war Europe and which you received from the old Jesuits is little more than a fading memory. Students are not taught facts, are not trained to think, and are not trained to respect and defend the traditional values of our Western Christian civilization, and they never hear about the real enemy who wants to replace all those values with the "gift" of socialism; instead they are taught how to use condoms, get abortions, "clarify values," and cultivate a bogus "self-esteem" totally unrelated to any achievement. Why? The secular humanist elite in our educational establishment wants it that way, and they are abetted by rank-and-file teachers too ignorant and too lazy to provide their charges with a real education. Sex is so much easier for all concerned than Shakespeare, the Bible, the multiplication tables, or the Federalist Papers!

Health Costs. These have reached astronomical levels and continue to increase. Why? Largely because doctors, hospitals, and others involved in health care have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in premiums for malpractice insurance, because unscrupulous lawyers sue them at the drop of a hat. The proper solution would be to return to the old legal principles which limited such raids on anyone believed to have a "deep pocket." Instead, we are drifting toward a nationalized medical system which will legitimize yet another raid on our pocketbooks and which will make us even more dependent on the omnipotent Welfare State.

Economy. A free market is governed by the laws of supply and demand and by competition; no one wants to pay more for lower quality goods. Unacceptable to the powers that be, so Mr. Bush goes to Japan and shames our country by groveling and begging the Japanese to go easy on Detroit. Quality? Every year, hundreds of thousands of American-made cars (which include many foreign-made parts!) are recalled because of defects. Is this true of German and Japanese cars? No! And prices? Shortly after my arrival in the U.S.A., I bought a new Pontiac for about one-half of my annual wage at the time. (I was working on an assembly line then.) Relative to average take-home pay, the cost today is much higher. Greedy corporate executives and greedy workers, manipulated by unscrupulous union bosses, are pricing themselves out of the market — and then demanding that Washington save them from the consequences!

Crime. America the Beautiful has become a haven for every imaginable crime. From every corner of the country we hear about murders, rapes, robberies, assaults, plus white-collar crimes! The people are scared and the police are helpless, while the courts and the lawyers operate a "revolving door" system of "justice" and the ACLU agitates on behalf of criminals — and never mind the victims! And if a citizen uses a firearm to defend himself, he will be the one in trouble with the "law"!

In Poland, after World War I, unsettled conditions encouraged the formation of gangs of robbers and murderers. Martial law was declared; any man committing a crime with weapon in hand was tried by a special court within three months of apprehension. The only question: did he do it? If he did, the only sentence: death. After three executions, the gangs and the problem disappeared. And in America? Murderers and other criminals are furloughed, paroled, and "rehabilitated," and then commit their next crime — and their next crime — and their next crime.... Pardon my French: this stinks!

The source of the problem? First our judges and our lawyers and our social "experts" forgot or denied that justice is a matter of law and that law is a matter of morality. Fundamentally, they ceased to believe in all three. Now these parasites make handsome profits by running the legal system in a way which ensures that crime will continue to rise and rise....

I could go on, but I have made my point. America is dying of cancer. Government is doing nothing except treating the symptoms, usually in a way which worsens the underlying disease. Perhaps it is already too late; perhaps we resemble Livy's description of the Romans: "unable to bear either their disease or its cure." Even if we are not quite there yet, we have very little time. As a constitutional president, rather than a dictator, there is only so much you can do. Two things, however, stand out. First, Americans must no longer be protected by the government — at the cost of their fellow Americans — from the cost of their greed, their opportunism, and their immorality. Reality will teach the lesson of responsibility. Second — and more important — we must again become a nation "under God," a nation which both places its trust in Him and fears to offend Him. It is time for someone to slice through the secular taboo and speak the truth which alone can save us.

A final comment: have you considered General Schwarzkopf as a possible running mate? That would make a powerful and bipartisan (in the best sense of the word) ticket, untainted by the CFR, the New World Order, and the country-club Republican crowd.

Enclosed for your information and consideration are some of my past writings.

Yours very truly,
Waclaw Bakierowski.

[Webmaster's note: Mr. Buchanan never replied to this letter, either.]
