TV 8 needs some common
sense
[Letter submitted to the Holland Sentinel, 19 February
1980]
Soon after Mr. Carter was elected President, the spokesman for "TV 8 Opinion," obviously enlightened by some higher spirit, gave the viewers a glorious picture of the President and what he would do for America. I immediately reacted by writing to TV 8, expressing my opinion that Mr. Carter's presidency will end with "Mene Tekel Peres" ["the handwriting is on the wall"] for America. (It seems that I was tragically right!)
A couple of days ago, there was another TV 8 Opinion, advising the viewers that the station "approved" registration, with the restriction that there would be a draft only in case of war. I think it is appropriate to advise those TV 8 intellectuals that they overlooked one small detail: to make a soldier out of a draftee takes almost two to three years. In other words, if we start the draft when a war breaks out, we must ask the enemy to wait a few years because we are not ready. I am sure that TV 8, being in the public service, will know how to handle the enemy and to get them to delay action until our soldiers are trained! Common sense is a very important thing, TV 8.
