"AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL IS ON THE ROAD TO HELL"
Open Letter (27 December 1993)
It is written in the Gospel that one who hurts one of God's little children would be better off if he were cast into the sea with a stone tied around his neck.... American Catholic priests are supposed to live by the Bible, but hundreds of them, including some of the highest rank, are suspected or known to have molested children or to have committed other sexual offenses. That costs the Church hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars in compensation for those who suffered at the hands of such "priests." I heard that Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago has been accused of involvement in some sexual crime. I also heard that he is closing two Catholic schools in Chicago. Could it be that the money used to support these schools is now needed for the legal defense of pervert priests? I can only hope that this is not the case.
It must not be imagined that only Catholic clergymen cause scandal. The entire breed of "televangelists," for example, exudes self-satisfaction, cynicism, and greed. Some of them have been proven to be lechers and outright swindlers.
The Gospels tell us to render unto God what is God's and unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Obedience to God comes first; then comes loyalty to our Caesar, that is, our Country and its Constitution. As a people, we are no longer oriented toward God. If anything, we expect Him to be oriented toward us, to endorse our sins in the name of "love" and to make us "feel good" about ourselves. The patriotism of past generations, which once swore allegiance to "one nation under God," has largely turned into a scramble for entitlements, tax breaks, and special favors from the government.
American Supreme Court justices swear an oath of office on the Bible...and then extend legal protection to the "alternate life style" of homosexuals and throw the cloak of legality over the butchery of the unborn!
Although the President, the members of his Cabinet, Senators, and Congressmen also swear their oaths of office on the Bible, our government has altogether abandoned both obedience to God and loyalty to the country and the Constitution. Among the highest office-holders we find members of the CFR, Trilaterals, Masons, and Bilderbergers, whose goals are a one-world government and/or the destruction of Christianity and Christian civilization! Both crime and the disintegration of the American family are largely the results of public policies whose consequences have been obvious for years so obvious that they imply intent. Our government's program of abandoning our national sovereignty to a one-world government is nothing short of treason.
In the New Testament it is written that no man can serve both God and Mammon. It is also written that we are to render unto God what is God's and unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Furthermore, it is written that we are to be obedient to the magistrates placed in authority over us. The traditional interpretation of this has been that our first and foremost duty is to God, the Author of the civil order, and that our duty to the state is derived from, and thereby regulated by, our primary duty to God. It was also understood that men in their public capacities, no less than in their private capacities, owe obedience primarily to God, not to a man-made Constitution, let alone to a Court's twisted and tendentious interpretation of that Constitution. Today, God and His commandments have been driven out of the public square, where men are expected to go through at least the actions of acknowledging the sovereignty of Caesar and Mammon. The ancient Christians, let us recall, preferred Martyrdom....
What comes next? Most religious groups have become so worldly in their outlooks, so indifferent about even their own nominal beliefs, and so willing to trim their sails to the spirit of the times that the regnant Liberal and statist orthodoxy is likely to allow them to continue to exist. In the meantime, there will be a continuation and an intensification of the pressure against public morality (e.g., condom distribution in schools, "values clarification" courses, and so on). If any religious groups recover their faith, their elan, and their numbers in sufficient measure to threaten the new atheist orthodoxy, they will be subjected to selective attacks, perhaps even in the form of Waco-style assaults against schools, churches, seminaries, and retreat houses. As the "Religious Right" tries to make the best of a bad deal by supporting "moderates" in preference to outright leftists, the philosophical and political center of gravity, if we may so call it, will shift further and further towards the left, towards those, that is, who seek the consummation of the overthrow of both Christianity and morality in America.
The bottom of the abyss is not yet in sight. We can be reassured only by the knowledge that God will not be defeated in the long run. In the words of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, spoken in the 1950's, "Christendom is dead, but not so Christ."
