Alchemy: Elemental and Essential Knowledge

by TransProp

Introduction:
Alchemy is one of the most mysterious skills. Few have any practice in it, and fewer still have invented an advanced form of it. Only two Alchemies are commonplace, and of those who have one, few [Edit: the author has noted that the originally posted percentages of 50-80% is incorrect and the percentage that follows is correct. -Daithi, 7/25/04](I'd guess 20-50%*) have ever actually used it. This is because most people only have Alchemy. Both Alchemy's assosiated skills require gate materials. Even a person who has all the gate materials may not want to waste their items by turning them into either lesser quantities of a different gate material, or a pretty, but currently useless, quintessence.
You could gain an alchemy level using Desert Alchemy, but you'd have to be either Metal or Earth†, and not all Earth players know they can use desert alchemy. Also, Desert Alchemy is a rather long and boring way of gaining a level.
Even if you've managed to get an Alchemy level, you need either powerful friends, or good luck and patience, to get your hands on an advanced alchemy knowledge‡.
Considering all this, there's no mystery why very few have advanced alchemy knowledges. Hopefully Daithi University and MITHRIL, in assosiation with myself, will manage to remedy this situation.

Alchemy Knowledges:
Following is a knowledge-by-knowledge. I've included the knowledges in order of rarity**.

Format:
KNOWLEDGE NAME
"a short description"
Required Stats
Required Knowledges
Required Element
Skills Given
Description of Skill 1††
Description of Skill 2 (if necessary)††

ALCHEMY
"learn to transform the elements"
1 Elemental Magic, 1 Sorcery, 1 Knowledge
None
Any
Distill and Alchemy
Distill

(5 hours to complete)

Combine the alchemical essences of the Elements.

This requires:
1 Adamant
1 Starstone
1 Earthbone
1 Teardrop
1 Moonleaf
6 Wood
1 Tungsten

associated skill: Alchemy

associated knowledge: Alchemy

Upon completion, this makes 1 quintessence. Quintessences are described as "an opaque white (or is it whiteish) stone useful in angelic magic‡‡" They weigh 1, and have no known use.

Alchemy

(7 hours to complete)

Transform one essense into another.

This requires:
1 spiritual energy
2 Moonleaf

associated skill: Alchemy

associated knowledge: Alchemy

This spell turns 2 gate materials of your supported element into 1 of your element. So, if you are metal it uses two earthbone, leaf it uses two starstone, etc.

DESERT ALCHEMY
"mass-produce ironweed"
None Known
None
Any can learn, only Earth and Metal can use
Desert Alchemy
Desert Alchemy

(3 hours to complete)

A simple transformative spell.

This requires:
2 Wood
100 Desert seeds

associated skill: Alchemy
associated knowledge: Desert Alchemy

This turns the desert seeds and wood into 15 ironweed. (Yes, I know it used to be 18 but that changed that...unless you get less ironweed when you get more levels, which probably isn't true) This skill gives about the same experience as baking***, but takes 3.5 times as long.

SOLAR ALCHEMY
"disrupt enemies with sky's alchemy"
~1 Alchemy level
Alchemy
Any
Create Glitterbomb and Dispatch Glitterbomb
Create Glitterbomb

(7 hours to complete)

This requires:
1 spiritual energy
1 Starstone
1 Tungsten
1 Wood

associated skill: Alchemy
associated knowledge: Solar Alchemy

This creates 1 glitterbomb. It weighs 1, and is used in Solar Alchemy's other skill.

Dispatch Glitterbomb

(1 minute to complete)

This requires:
1 spiritual energy
1 Glitterbomb

associated skill: Alchemy
associated knowledge: Solar Alchemy

This skill destroys the glitterbomb and cancels whatever action the target is doing. Please don't use "dispatch glitterbomb" on someone who's inventing something or trying to wake up from an astral sleep. That's just plain wrong.

ADAMANTINE ALCHEMY
"learn to create synthetic adamant"
1 Alchemy
Crystallurgy
Metal
Transform Tungsten†††
Transform Tungsten

(57 minutes to complete)

Distill the essence of tungsten into a harder metal

This requires:
8 Tungsten
5 Wood

assosiated skill: Alchemy
assosiated knowledge: Adamantine Alchemy

This is perhaps the most useful alchemy. Not only because you can create adamant, which you can get someone else to convert into other gate materials, getting you whatever gate material you want, but also because of the experience this gives. After about 2 days of only transforming tungsten, I got from the very start of Alchemy 2 to Alchemy 3. And it uses no s.e. in it's production, so it's a great way for you to get levels without s.e.

TERRESTRIAL ALCHEMY
"unknown"
Unknown
Unknown
Unknown
Unknown
Unknown

I don't have terrestrial alchemy, so I can't report on it. However, it's known to exist because earthbone says (or used to say, I don't have any on me right now) "...used in terrestrial alchemy" or "...useful in terrestrial alchemy". Perhaps this will be one of the things discovered in Daithi Uninversity or MITHRIL.

IRON ALCHEMY
"learn to distill ironweed"
1 Alchemy
Desert Alchemy
Any can learn, only Metal and Earth can use
Iron Alchemy
Iron Alchemy

(3 hours to complete)

A simple transformative spell.

This requires:
4 Wood
31 Ironweed

associated skill: Alchemy
associated knowledge: Iron Alchemy

This creates 1 iron, which weighs 1. Iron has no known use. Perhaps uses of iron will be one of the things Daithi University or MITHRIL might find out.

*I'm guessing here.
†This and iron alchemy is the only case of a skill that can be used by more than one element, but not all of them. There might be others...
‡I don't mean "Advanced Alchemy" I'm not sure if that exists. By advanced alchemy knowledge, I mean an uncommon alchemy, i.e., an alchemy that is not regular alchemy or desert alchemy
**I'm guessing about which alchemy skills are rarest here. But it is an educated guess, I'm not completely guessing.
††All times are at alchemy level 3
‡‡Quintessence predicts an Angelic Magic knowledge with this description. Simmilarly, Earthbone predicts Terrestrial Alchemy and Moonleaf and Teardrop predict advanced forms of Elemental Magic
***Baking takes (or used to take, I'm not sure if it was changed) 50 times to gain a level.
†††I'm describing Transform Tungsten from memory. The time or description may be slightly different.

I am very, very, sorry for my overzealous use of punctuation.
