Grading Poetry Barbara Daniels Here are the main things I’m looking for in each poem: 1. The poem depends on images. These images are precise, detailed, and clear, capturing physical realities; the literal situation in the poem is clear.
2. The point of view is consistent and believable. The language of the poem fits the self who is presented as speaking (or thinking) in it.
3. The form of the poem gradually reveals itself, every detail contributing to the overall effect.
4. The poem continually moves forward; rewards for readers appear in it early and often.
5. The language doesn’t rely on worn-out phrases. The verbs and nouns are vivid and concrete. Repetition appears to be intentional.
6. The ideas in the poem aren’t overly familiar.
7. The sounds in the poem provide interesting or appealing music.
8. The poem doesn’t explain or spell things out too much; it’s surprising.
