Our vacation in the Canadian Rockies

by the Pack
Thursday evening, the second week of September, there was much excitement in our house with the management running up and down the stairs to the garage carrying things. We knew something big was up and watched VERY closely to make sure we weren't left out. Friday morning dawned sunny and beautiful and after more frantic activity our management loaded us all into the van. The accomodations looked pretty swank so we suspected this was not a trip to the vet --whew! We drove and drove and drove all day except for a stop for lunch at a place the Management called Burger King. The male bought an extra order of french fries which everyone except Feather and the female ate. We began to think this vacation thing might not be so bad -- if we ever stopped driving that is.
After lunch we drove and drove some more and finally stopped late in the afternoon at this place in Sandpoint, Idaho. It is beside a big lake and there were lots of geese! Our management would not let us chase the geese -- what party poopers!!
We got several nice long walks at this interesting spot but the next morning we piled back into the van again and headed north (we like that direction!) We stopped at a place called "Customs" and the man there seemed to be amazed that we were all going on vacation. Well OF COURSE we were all going!!!
The Management had to stop there and eat some fruit because they couldn't take fruit across this thing called the "border." We got some apple pieces out of this deal, which we love. We drove and drove some more and then started up some REALLY BIG hills. Melody did not like this at all! Finally after going up and down many BIG hills we arrived at our cabin.
The cabin seemed pretty OK and we checked it out very thoroughly you may be sure! Our management tied us to the picnic table while they carried a whole bunch of stuff into the cabin. Then we got to go inside and have dinner.
We made ourselves at home pretty quickly as you can see. We were just glad to get out of that darn van!!

Melody really knows how to get comfortable no matter where she is. Here she is hogging the space right in front of the woodstove in case the Management decided to build a fire.
The next day we had to get back in the van again but since the management had put our pinch collars on us we knew something special was up. We had to ride up another big hill and then the management parked the car where there were woods all around us! We were so excited we were all barking and woowooing at once!! Shadow just made a complete fool of herself doing her "screaming weasel" imitation!
After a short walk through the woods we came to a beautiful blue lake called Lake Louise where there were a lot of people who were very excited to see us. We are sorry to report that our Management lost a whole roll of film which had great pictures of us with all of the people who wanted to pet us and have their picture taken with us in front of the beautiful lake. Humans can be VERY careless.
At last we started up a trail by the lake and climbed and climbed. There were lots of chipmunks and voles but the Management wouldn't let us chase them. Humans just don't let dogs have any fun! After a lot of climbing we arrived at another lake. The last part was kind of scary because we had to climb steep stairs that were just sort of hanging above the rocks! The Management was wheezing and puffing but we were raring to climb some more! However, we had to stop for awhile for pictures (and to let the puny humans rest). The one below shows us with the alpha male -- we're standing where there is a great view of the Bow Valley -- humans seem to be interested in such things and take lots of pictures of stuff like that.

Here is the human female in front of LakeAgnes. As usual she has the leashes all tangled up while we run circles around her. When she finally got organized we set out on a trail along the lake on our way to Big Beehive. No, there are no bees there -- the rock formation just looks like a big beehive. Shadow: And a good thing too since Tasha is always trying to eat them and she is allergic to them -- not the brightest bulb in the bunch. Tasha: I heard that! You've been known to eat a bee or two yourself. Shadow: Yeah, but I don't swell up like a big furry pumpkin! Feather: Can we just get back to our vacation?
OK, OK! -- on to Big Beehive!
