An auction of
items made by or donated by Sibernetters to raise money for "Save Our Siberians -
Siberspace Rescue Fund."
Sibernetters have organized
to make and sell items for a cause near and dear to their hearts: Siberian Rescue.
Siberian Rescue is made up of volunteers to help save as many abandoned and often abused
Siberians as possible. This is difficult and often heart breaking work but thanks to the
Rescue volunteers thousands of Siberians are saved each year from being put to death.
These dogs eventually find loving homes with people who understand and love the breed.
The idea of selling items
made of husky fur came about during one of the shedding seasons when Siberian owners on
Sibernet-L were commiserating with one another about the quantities of fur their dogs were
shedding ... and shedding ... and shedding. One of the Sibernetters, Pat Tetrault,
suggested knitting items from yarn made of Siberian fur and selling them, with the
proceeds going to Siberian Rescue. Another Sibernetter, Janet Whitsell, offered to spin
the fur into yarn and several more
people offered to knit, crochet and craft the yarn into items that could be sold. Others
offered their services as webmaster and co-ordinators.
Siberians generally shed
their soft undercoats twice a year, although with indoor dogs the shedding may go on all
year. The undercoat fur makes up into a yarn that is silky and soft yet very firm
textured. Natural colors vary as undercoats are different colors in different colored
Siberians.
The founding of
"Save Our Siberians - Siberspace Rescue Fund"
In late 1997 and early 1998
a group of Sibernetters rallied around a puppy mill rescue. (Read about part of the story
and see pictures of some of the rescues at this site). A puppy mill operator was going
out of business and was selling his stock. While some objected to paying a puppy miller
for his stock others reasoned that these dogs could be taken out of the endless breeding
cycle since, if not rescued, many would be purchased by other puppy mill operations. Over
three thousand dollars was raised in a few short weeks to buy 23 adults and 12 pups. Sadly
eight pups had already been promised to a broker but within days of the rescue several
more litters of pups were whelped. All of the dogs and pups are now in foster homes or
have gone to live with their new permanent families.
This event was pivotal in
inspiring a group of Sibernet members to form a permanent rescue fund so we would never be
caught short again. That rescue fund is Save Our Siberians - Siberspace Rescue
Fund. The fund is now incorporated and is working on obtaining tax-exempt status.
Currently funds are raised through the auction and through sales of T-shirts, sweatshirts,
coffee mugs, etc. An all volunteer board made up of Sibernet members run the fund. The
fund is not sponsored by Sibernet-L.
Our mission is to try to
fill some of the needs that the large rescue operations cannot or do not wish to deal
with. For example, we send money to help with expenses for medical costs for rescue
animals that otherwise might be put down because of costly treatments required.
