In
June of 1861 a number of Marylanders from Baltimore and the Eastern
Shore crossed the Potomac and made their way to Virginia to form a
Confederate cavalry regiment. While waiting for their Colonel, a
handful of them decided to start up their own artillery battery instead .
One hundred forty five men were enlisted and
mustered into Confederate service as the First Maryland
Artillery (Dement's Battery).
In the summer of 1862
they were assigned to Jackson's Army, and during the battle at Cedar
Run, it was reported the 1st Maryland's fire was so accurate that
they decimated a Federal battery opposite them.
Although
they suffered many human casualties during the conflict, , the 1st Maryland
Artillery never lost a single gun during four years of battle.
