In 1860 approximately 75-100 men banded together to form a cavalry company called the Howard County Dragoons in Howard County Maryland. After hostilities broke out in April of 1861, Union sympathies of Maryland politicians forced the company to either disband or ride south into Virginia and join up with other Confederate forces... they chose the latter.

After Gettysburg, the 1st Maryland Cavalry  was assigned along Gen. Ewell's trains to provide protection from marauding Federal cavalry.  With only 50 men and a single gun, they held off numerous attacks from the full might of General Kilpatrick's Union Cavalry.  Their stand against Kilpatrick has become legendary.

Our unit represents Co. B of the 1st MD Cavalry. Ownership or access to a horse is not required to join, as we also have troopers who represent dismounted skirmishers during events.
