Foxtrot
is the son of Fritz and Dolly, grandson of Harry
and Harriet. I flew Foxtrot for seven seasons, longer than any other
Harris's hawk I've had. He was a very flashy flyer, worked well with the dogs, and
was death on cottontails. His
specialty was mountain cottontails (Sylvilagus nuttalli), which are small
and shifty like Foxtrot himself. He
once caught five of these quicksilver bunnies on a day so windy that most of the
Harris's hawks at the Washington Falconers Association field meet came home
empty-footed. His only real flaw
was
that he wouldn't tolerate another tiercel in the hunting field.
When put up to use as a breeder, Foxtrot became an excellent father. He brings food to his mate all year 'round, so that she never has to leave her perch if she doesn't want to. He builds the nest, incubates the eggs when WD needs to take a break, and feeds babies until their crops look like tennis balls.
WD-40 is the daughter of Malcolm and White Wing, and a sister to Lola. The Coulsons sent WD to Dan Pike in 1988. Dan caught more than 300 rabbits with WD in a few seasons, and of course fell in love with her typically amiable personality. When WD landed on a hot wire and her foot locked around it, Dan was sure that she was dead. He knocked her off the wire with a thrown stick, and amazingly she survived the electric shock and the fall from the wire. Dan swore that he would never risk her again, and put her up for breeding. With Lola's death in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, WD's genes are even more valuable.
The best tiercel Harris's hawks I've ever known came from WD and Foxtrot. Dan Pike flew Deion, and I flew Neon, brothers from the same clutch, in 1999-2001. In 2001 Deion choked to death on a rabbit leg, so in 2003 I paired Foxtrot and WD-40 again to produce more tiercels like Deion. Neon, who is without a doubt the best jack-hawking tiercel Harris's hawk I've ever had, is now paired with my female 'Q'. Unlike most tiercels who become picky about their jackrabbit slips after being kicked around, Neon's intensity level goes up after being kicked off, and he frequently rebounds and makes the catch in a cloud of dust. There are several good stories about Neon' exploits. Both Deion and Neon flew jacks fantastically well even at weights over 700g, giving them the size and strength to prevail. At the end of the 2003 breeding season, I gave Foxtrot and WD back to Dan, keeping a young tiercel ('Romeo') from their second clutch. I flew Romeo in 2004, then gave this jack-slaying wunderkind to Dan, who still flies Romeo every season.
Foxtrot's and WD's offspring are fourth-generation captive-bred.
