Barbara F. Backer, M.Ed., is an early
childhood consultant, freelance writer, and former preschool teacher. She is
the author of ten books for parents and teachers of preschool children, and
she is a contributor to many similar books.
For six years she was a regular contributor to "First Teacher" magazine and
for two years her monthly column, "Tips for Teachers" appeared in Scholastic's
"Early Childhood Today". One of her articles for Scholastic's "Parent and
Child" magazine won a national award for educational writing from EdPress,
the association of education press. Barbara also has written for teachers,
children and parents in "Highlights for Children", "Guideposts for Kids",
"Crayola Kids", "Early Childhood News", "Lowcountry Parent", "Woman's Day"
and many others. She has been a regular contributor to "Real Families,
Real Fun", an on-line family magazine. Barbara also teaches childcare
providers and is a CDA representative.

Some of my earliest memories are of "playing school" with my dolls and stuffed animals. I've always been interested in teaching and in learning more about young children. I worked in summer camps for most of my teenage years, and as an adult I directed a summer day camp for 8 years.
My 18 years as a preschool teacher flew by. I enjoyed every year and learned from each and every child. My classroom was a place where children explored and created with materials, and where they enjoyed learning from each other, the environment, and the adults in their surroundings. I left the preschool classroom to spend more time writing for teachers and parents of preschoolers. I want to share with them what I have learned while working with young ones. I hope those who incorporate my ideas, philosophy and activities into their own interactions with children will also experience the joy that comes to me when I share my life with a child.
I salute parents and teachers of preschoolers. You have the most important
and most rewarding job. I wish you the happiness I've experienced with young
ones.
