Sample Activity 2

Bracelets and Bangles - A Quick Trick With Pipe Cleaners

Gather These Materials

Where: anywhere

How: Show the children how to bend a pipe cleaner into a circle then twist the ends together to hold it tight. As they make bracelets, have them put the bracelets on one arm. Each time a child adds one, have her stop and count the bracelets. When she has more bracelets than she can count, have her move some bracelets to her other arm then count separately the bracelets on each arm. When she again has too many to count, stop the counting game and just make bracelets for fun.

Variations:

This activity helps children learn about counting and about number combinations when they see that 2 red bracelets plus 1 green bracelet total the same number as 3 blue bracelets. They also see that two red bracelets and 1 green bracelet is the same total as 2 green bracelets and 1 red bracelet.
