On being a great grandparent

by Laura O'Brien

Process

It seems like grandparents always know what to do at all the right times. It almost seems like they were born knowing how to be perfect grandparents. Unfortunately, becoming a perfect grandparent is not as easy as you think. Years of effort go into becoming a perfect grandparent. Our grandparents learned from their grandparents, who in turn learned from their grandparents. For those who are stressed for time, there are a few main pointers that every grandparent should know. To be a good grandparent, you have to cook delicious food, have a time consuming hobby, and be able to love your grandchildren unconditionally.

Grandparents are always the best people to go to for a good meal. To be a great grandparent, you have to know how to cook all the wonderful foods, ranging from chocolate chip cookies all the way to cream of wheat. Grandmothers are usually great with the baking category. Chocolate chip cookies and pies are among grandchildren's favorite foods. Great grandpas always know how to barbecue a hamburger, hot dog, or drumstick. If they do not know how to cook it themselves, they know of an excellent place to order one. Grandmothers always know all the old family recipes. A great grandmother will always let her grandchildren cook with her so that they will be able to learn the recipes, also. Great grandparents take the time to teach their grandchildren all there is to know about food, so that some day the grandchildren will be able to teach their grandchild how to cook.

Grandparents are always fun to be around when they are being passionate about their hobbies. Grandparents who have an interesting hobby can be great because they will want to teach you their trade, and they will be fun to learn from. Golfing, sewing, knitting, fishing, and painting are some hobbies that grandparents like to do. Some other hobbies are stamp collecting, crossword puzzles, Christmas ornament making, and watching TV with a lap dog. A lap dog can easily be spotted with any grandmother. Lapdogs are usually small dogs that are the perfect size to rest on the lap of any person. Miniature poodles, miniature terriers, and bichons are some of the dogs that can be the right size. The dogs usually have a small bed, or basket filled with toys. The dogs add a very good accent to a grandparent. The dogs keep the grandparents young and active so that they will be able to keep up with their grandchildren. The dogs can be time consuming because they are often like a child who needs a lot of attention. Sometimes grandparents will have the dogs be one of their main hobbies. No matter what kind of hobby a grandparent has, grandchildren will love to help, learn, and follow along with their grandparents because the children love to be near their grandparents.

The last hint that we can give you about how to be a great grandparent is that you must always love your grandchildren unconditionally. No matter how many cookies they eat for breakfast, you must love them. No matter the bad grades they bring home on report card day, you must love them. No matter how late past their curfews they come home, you must love them. "Unconditionally" means under any condition. It means the world to children, when they can do something bad, get in trouble for it, but see that their elders still love and care for them. They might not be happy with the idea of getting in trouble, but you are only scolding them because you love them, and later on they will see that, too.

Grandparents are the easiest people to love and adore because they can do no wrong in a caring child's mind. They are your parent's parents. They have been around for a long time and they deserve extra respect. That idea is a typical response to a great grandparent, and you can have that status if you do not do anything to prove your status otherwise. Grandparents can be the most important people in a child's life. Grandparents can be the people children run to if the relationship between them and their parents is rocky.

Grandparents can be the shining light in a storm, the storm being life in general. If you follow the rules mentioned above, you could be that shining light, also. Being a grandparent can be the most important job in a person's life. You can make such a difference in a young person's life. That is why you have to be a great grandparent, and not a lousy one. The grandparents I have had in my life have made a great impact on me. I hope that some day I will be as great a grandparent to my grandchildren as they were to me.
