We
found out today that the area of Camp Scholler where we hold the Piece
of Grass is no longer available to us. It's now going to be the 24-hour
generator area. Unfortunately, we can't just move the event 10 rows farther
back or say we're going to be in another location, because EAA hasn't
yet provided maps of what areas of the campground will be open to tenters
(which is what I am), and we also don't know what the effect will be of
pushing non-generator campers and non-electrical/water hookup campers
farther back toward the highway, but presumably it will be harder to find
a comfortable location because those campers are now going to be vying
for fewer spots.
Presently,
I show up at Oshkosh on the Friday before AirVenture to be sure we have
a location, but I'm not willing to get there any earlier this year.
But the biggest problem is I won't be able to know where the location
will be until I get to Oshkosh and I'll have no mechanism to tell you
where we'll be. I can't very well invite 100 people to an event, and then
ask them to buy the campsite, and then not tell them where it will be.
I've
returned everyone's money since people donated to buy the campsites and
it's pretty clear Camp Scholler isn't goint to be a practical location.
It still might be possible to have some sort of organized get-together
-- the Van's dinner would be the most obvious --
but at this point I'm not committed to hosting it.
For
those of you who donated early (like, in March), it might take a little
longer to get the money back to you since PayPal doesn't allow refunds
after 60 days.
Thank
you for your interest.
Once
again this year, we're hoping to host the annual Wednesday night get-together
for RV builders and pilots, their families and friends, and anyone who
is interested in spending a grassroots evening at AirVenture
at Oshkosh swapping tales and renewing friendships.
If you're
unfamiliar with the event, it started as a small barbecue in 2003, grew
to a gigantic production in 2007, then took a step back to its roots in
2009. There were many favorable comments after last year's get-together,
so we'll try to do it again with only a few minor changes -- a better
grill for those of you who wish to bring your own food to cook, and more
fire for the campfire for those of you who want to sit around after the
sun goes down (Sunset on Piece of Grass Night is 8:23 p.m. CT). See
the history of the event.
We'll
get together for an evening of sitting around doing nothing, not picking
door prizes, not cooking, not sitting under a tent, not drinking someone
else's free beer. In other words, it'll be a perfect Oshkosh evening.
You're
invited to stop by in the campground where we'll have -- hopefully --
plenty of space for you to sit (on the chair that you bring),
drinking beer or soft drinks (that you brought) and eating some food (that
you cooked on the small, cheapie WalMart grill that we'll buy. We're not
entirely without the desire for a little work!)
We'll
watch the sun set over beautiful Highway 41 and chat about everything
(your first flight, my taking forever to complete the RV) but please observe
normal "hangar rules":
No Politics
No Religion
No Primer
No whining
about the media
DONATE
There
is considerable expense in hosting the evening, even though we're
not doing the big barbecue anymore. I have to buy extra campsites
to accomodate everybody, and I arrive on Friday to be sure I can
stake out the location where you expect to find me. EAA has again
raised the per night rate and it is now $22. If I purchase six sites,
that will cost $132 per night. Since I arrive on Friday, I have
to pay through the end of AirVenture. But if I cash in the sites
after Wednesday's evening, the cost will still be $792. We might
be able to get away with four sites for $528.
So that's the
goal we have to set to have an event this year. Passing the hat doesn't
work. Most people don't contribute, we've learned over the years, and
I'm no longer able to bankroll the event.
So
we're looking for donations -- small donations -- between now and
June 1. Please consider helping fund the evening. This is not a
reservation to attend (We'll call for RSVPs after we know whether
we can afford the campsites), or payment on your behalf (we don't
charge for the evening). This is simply a donation. I will create
a page shortly that will list those who contribute. Any excess funds
will be donated to Young Eagles. If the event is not held, all donations will be returned. If the event is rained out, however, I will still have to pay for the camping sites.

HOW
TO FIND THE PIECE OF GRASS 2010
I'm always located in the same place.
If you have a GPS, the coordinates are:
N 43 58.489
W 088 34.718
There
have been many changes to the EAA grounds but here are some instructions
I've written in past years which I'll try to update as the changes become
posted on the AirVenture Web site. If you're concerned about finding the
location, stop by during the week. Happy hour is 4-6 p.m. each day starting
the Friday before AirVenture and we always seem to have a nice group of
people coming and going.
The campground
now features electrical hookups plumbing connection -- at more than $40
a night -- in much of the lower area. We don't know if this is going to
push the "little people" out farther into the field earlier,
but I presume we'll be able to set up our area, since I get there on Friday.
This is what my campsite looks like:
I'll probably
leave the Chevy Cavalier home this year (You have to admit, it's pretty
impressive that I got the entire POG and campsite gear into that thing!)
and bring the wife's Navy blue Subaru wagon)
Click
this image for a larger version which will show you how to find the bus.
EAA is also building
a bike path from airplane camping areas to the campground. It's still
under construction and the route is somewhat unclear but you can find
details
of it here.
North
of the EAA grounds:
(This includes the dorms)
Take Highway 41 South. The exits for the EAA while likely be closed, you
drive past the EAA headquarters and campground and take your next exit
-- Highway 26 (aka "N") and turn left at the end of the exit
ramp. Go over the bridge, and take your next left onto the frontage road
-- Poberezny Road. Go past the campground (past the sign that says "camper
registration next right," passed the camper registration turn and
the road will fork to the right. Follow that road (Waukau Rd.), staying
in the right-hand lane, and park in the next lot. If you come after 5
p.m., there will be no charge.
If you want
to walk from there: (If you want to take a bus, click here)
Park
as far to the south as you can, by the snow fence and -- if you want to
walk -- near the break in the fence by the "inflatable movie screen."
Walk up that road to the main road -- Schaik Avenue -- take a right, crossing
the road at a time of your choosing. Walk west past the camper locator
and look for a yellow sign by the road near 14th Street. That'll send
you into the field. See the creek bed? Follow the creek bed on either
side and you'll see us on 12th between the Lindbergh and Elm. Look for
the yellow RV BBQ signs. These are left over from previous years. There's
no BBQ.
If
you want to take a bus from there:
Park in the far southeastern end of the lot near Forest Home Rd. (near
the Main Entrance to Airventure) and walk south (turning right as you
face the Main Entrance) until you get to the Red Barn. Kitty-corner to
the red barn you'll see some showers and the sign "Camper Shuttle").
Get on the shuttle (donate 25 cents, it won't kill you!) and ride up Schaik
Avenue. The bus will turn into the the driveway around the West End Store
(a yellow building). Walk across the street, looking for a yellow BBQ
sign by 14th Street. That'll send you into the field. See the creek bed?

There's
no cost to attend but it would be helpful to get a count of the number
of people I can expect. Please send
me an e-mail with your name, city, a word about your RV building or
flying (if applicable) and the number of people attending with you. I'll
add you to the list. If you'd like to bring some snacks or salad to share,
feel free. Again, it is NOT necessary to donate in order
to attend.
WHO'S
COMING?
Rens
& Joke Verhoeven (Netherlands) I have built an RV 9A. Flying from April 2009. (Was on the RVator
cover the second issue of 2009). It is a great plane and I flew till now
about 130 hours with it. The motor is an 160 Hp Lycoming O-320-E3D and
the propeller is a 3-blade CS from MT. In May last year Van’s brother
Jerry was with his wife Judy in the Netherlands and I was very pleased
that he wanted to fly with me in My RV. (see picture) We live in Veghel
in the south of the Netherlands.

Scott & Tanya Card - RV-9A flying, Oshkosh Outstanding Workmanship
award in 2009. Working on an 8. Gotta have his and her airplanes. :)
Tony Phillips, Hartland, WI.
I may fly my RV-9 but that’s doubtful. It’ll be done by then
but not out of Phase I. I am going to get OSH inside my “box”.
We’ll see. My son Aaron will be coming as well.
Terry Ruprecht - I'm a 9A Tip-up builder near Champaign, IL ...looking
forward to soon working on my RV FULL TIME !! As of Aug 1, 2010 I will
be a retiree, no longer a working stiff. :o)) I presently fly 172s with
the Decatur Aero Club, Decatur, IL. I'll be attending with my brother
(who's doing flight training to get his PPL), another flying buddy and
Cozy builder, and a 4th guy in our group ... who's a wannabee in both
the builder and pilot categories. Buddy #4 gets special dispensation,
however, because his younger brother, Brian, is active USAF and a previous
jet jockey on the F-15 West Coast Demo Team. Brian periodically shows
up at fly-ins we're attending, and let's us bask in his shadow for a day
or so. ;o)
Tom Webster, Columbus, OH. - RV-7AQB N462TW (flying) Luscombe 8A (sold)
CX4 (building) I should have my RV-7A in Home Built Parking and I plan
on staying in Camp Scholler. I last flew my Luscombe to OSH in 2007, (Owned
it for 35 years). I first flew my RV in July 2006 and have 200 hours on
the airframe and about 120 on my SECOND new engine. (It's a good war story/fairy
tale) I started a Thatcher CX4 about a year ago. If you really want to
appreciate Vans Aircraft, build a 'plans only' homebuilt. The RV-12 didn't
fit my requirements and being 73 years young, I thought I better have
a LSA in the back of my hangar.
Don Pansier, Green Bay, WI. RV-7 finishing up
Terry & Linda Frazier - RV7A 92 hours and thru first condition

working on my 7A, like you a pay-as-you-go project. Now year 7 of what
I hope will be only a 10 year project. This will be the summer of the

Kevin
Horton - I'm planning to be at OSH this year with my RV-8, and assuming
I make it to OSH I will attend the Piece of Grass. There is a very slight
chance my wife will come along, but I suspect the odds of that are less
than 5%, as she hates gatherings where she doesn't know anyone else there.
Brad

Bryan
Douglass - Missoula, MT. - I'm building an RV-10 and this will be
my first time to Oshkosh. I'll be at the BBQ without a doubt. I have a
commercial flight and rental car booked and am planning to camp if I can
figure out how to check my minimal camping gear on the airline.
Melina and Don McNamara - My wife and I are planning to attend. It
took me 13 years to build my RV, but will be flying in with it this year.
Not sure where we'll be camping -- Scholler or with the plane -- but I'm
sure we can hoof it over to POG. Thanks for putting this together!-- N8RV

my wings and have been slowly working on the QB fuselage. I'll be challenging
you for longest build time ;-).
Mike

KY. I am building a RV-9A currently in the finishing stage. I should have
my engine mounted before OSH. In attendance will be my daughter Samantha,
my brother Tony and myself.
