Bernie's Tai Chi Page

This page is dedicated to Tai Chi in it's many forms.

The practice of Tai Chi appears to be physical on first observation, but its power comes from the mental (internal) aspects. Taoist philosophy teaches the mental disciplines and one must understand Taoism to gain the full potential. The Tao Te Ching is an ancient Chinese book, around 2500 years old. Taoist philosophy is embedded in the poems of this book, allegedly written by Lao Tse. Scholars still debate who the actual author is, and you can find many translations of the original. The age of the language used in the original manuscript makes some words difficult, if not impossible to translate. The book contains 81 poems on Tao, which translates to mean

The Way

Five Confucian and Taoist Classics

The Tao that can be followed is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be named is not the eternal name.
The nameless is the origin of heaven and earth
While naming is the origin of the myriad things.
Therefore, always desireless, you see the mystery
Ever desiring, you see the manifestations.
These two are the same--
When they appear they are named differently.

Their sameness is the mystery,
Mystery within mystery;

The door to all marvels.

The Tao is so vast that when you use it, something is always left.
How deep it is!
It seems to be the ancestor of the myriad things.
It blunts sharpness
Untangles knots
Softens the glare
Unifies with the mundane.
It is so full!

It seems to have remainder.

Understanding harmony is called the Constant.
Knowing the Constant is called illumination.
Nourishing life is called blessing.

Having control of your breath is called strength.
