PAGE TWO

By the time Trick-or-Treaters arrive, the front porch is enclosed with black plastic. The porch light is replaced with a green bulb and the only other lighting is a floor lamp made from a clear Bucky skull, an antique floor lamp with a red light bulb next to the body, and black lights. I also carried a small light I could switch from regular light to black light as needed.

At the top of the stairs is a table with a Barfing Betty. Her puke is a glowing green. Underneath the floor- length tablecloth a werewolf peeks out, turning his head side to side. I greet my "guests" as Dr Lou Natick, a doctor doing scientific studies. I take sips from a goblet containing Betty's liquid during the evening. I explain that some of my victims, er, guests, have gotten away from me, though some were captured and remain in the yard. I invite everyone into my lab.

The fiber optic lamp and yellow-and-orange lamp gave a weird glow to the surrounding area.

I would welcome each new victim and tell them I needed a hand. Showing them the wiggling hand suspended in a frame, I asked if I could examine their hand, as I needed a left hand to complete my set. Most kids wouldn't show me their hand, but if they were happy to give it up, I explained theirs was too small, maybe next year. They examined the body parts on the table, and most were fascinated by the foot in bloody water in a round clear bowl.

At the end of the table was a skeleton sitting in a chair. I explained he was one of my departed helpers. My newest helper, my Mom, dressed in bloody scrubs, was nearby helping wherever it was needed. She calmed down the little kids and kept everyone safe. She also kept the curious out of the cemetary.

At the end of the porch was a table holding a man, lying very still. I told those whose hand was too small that perhaps they would like to donate something else, a heart perhaps. I had put this stuffed body on the table as a last-minute filler, leaving his shirt open a couple of buttons to show his (battery-operated) beating heart. This scared more Trick-or-Treaters than just about anything. The red light next to the table was very dim, and you had to get quite close to see the heart beat. Many kids never saw it, as they were too scared to get that close.

Beating Heart

Some kids had to be reminded to get their treat. Most everyone got candy, a toy, and a choice of skull or ghost whistle, except for those who ran off too scared to wait.
