Dear Dr. Noetahl

As I have grown older I am racked with self doubt and my mind is filled with confusion. What is the point of it all anyway?
Bob

Well Bob

Two questions, last first: Bob, there ain't no point! Being aware is really a great thing. It just seems to us there has got to be some reason why we aren't rocks. I can assure you that this need for a point to life is a by product of being aware. First last: Confusion, self doubt sounds healthy to me. Seems like you ain't jumping to conclusions anymore, but have a little wisdom thing nagging at your thinking process (hope this isn't too technical). Don't get carried away with thinking about your existence. You are here, you do exist, enjoy it!

Dear Dr. Noetahl

I'm having problems fitting in. I seem to have different views of the world than most people. It has led to problems in the work place and some problems at home.  Is it me?
Bob

Well Bob
The first thing that came to mind was the Beatles song "Fool on the Hill" the song that celebrates eccentricity.  Just a thought.
If you want to fit in then you have a problem, but if you really don't care if you fit in, then you have two problems.  We exist in our bodies and our bodies are the result of millions of years of group interaction dealing with the problems of getting food, providing shelter and reproducing. This is what we are. The views you that you say are causing you problems are just froth. Important froth, powerful froth, but just froth. What you are seeking is not ideas, but happiness.
If you think fitting in will make you happy my recommendation is  just pretend! Do those little human things with other humans, hang in there and try to act like someone you admire for their people skills. The skills might soon become second nature to you.  Pretend you're normal.
You should also have an expression for your eccentricity. A little structured thing may be at a certain time each week, so you can still be you. The cool thing about this is if you still don't find happiness you can go see a shrink and they can put you on drug therapy like millions of other Americans. Go for it Bob.

Dear Dr. Noetahl

I've been playing solitaire on my computer for years. I get the feeling that the game has deep meaning, what's going on?

Bob

Well Bob
I too have been playing solitaire
on my computer.  I don't think the game has any deep meaning, but the game can be a very good teaching tool.  The main thing I get from it (besides eye hand coordination and track ball practice) is an appreciation for the relationship between skill and luck.  There seems to be certain ways the game plays out.  I have formed certain impressions on these different scenarios, but have not formalized my ideas.  I hope to have a separate page dedicated to these ideas, but when it will appear is unknown at this time. I spend too much time playing solitaire which interferes with my research. This is a lessen in itself.
